over ZTE and Huawei security"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Intelligence agencies in the United States <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2018\/02\/14\/technology\/huawei-intelligence-chiefs\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>have warned Americans<\/strong><\/a> not to purchase Huawei or ZTE smartphones, due to security concerns.<\/p>\n<p>The CIA, NSA, FBI, and the Defense Intelligence Agency told the US Senate Intelligence Committee that the Chinese-based telecoms products pose a risk to America.<\/p>\n<p>FBI Director Chris Wray said they provide &#8220;the capacity to maliciously modify or steal information, and to conduct undetected espionage&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>This is not the first time Huawei and ZTE products have come under fire.<\/p>\n<p>In 2012, the Australian government <a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/business\/248797-takealot-guilty-of-fake-prices.html\"><strong>banned Huawei<\/strong><\/a> from bidding on national broadband network contracts.<\/p>\n<p>The decision was based on concerns that Huawei could engage in network hacking at the behest of the Chinese Communist Party.<\/p>\n<p>In the same year, the <a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/security\/76504-huawei-and-us-security-battle.html\"><strong>US Congress warned<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0that telecom equipment supplied by Huawei and ZTE could be used for spying, and called for their exclusion from government contracts.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Security<\/h3>\n<p>MyBroadband asked Huawei and ZTE for comment regarding the security concerns, and both companies declined to comment on South Africa specifically.<\/p>\n<p>Statements from their Chinese-based headquarters, focused on the USA, were issued instead.<\/p>\n<p>Huawei said it is aware of a range of US government activities, seemingly aimed at inhibiting Huawei&#8217;s business in the US.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHuawei is trusted by governments and customers in 170 countries worldwide and poses no greater cybersecurity risk than any ICT vendor,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<p>ZTE said as a publicly-traded company, it is committed to adhering to applicable laws and regulations in the US.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are working with carriers to pass strict testing protocols and adhering to the highest business standards,\u201d said ZTE.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur mobile phones and other devices incorporate US-made chipsets, US-made operating systems, and other components.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cZTE takes cybersecurity and privacy seriously, and remains a trusted partner to our US
