WASPs in South Africa are overseen by an organisation called WASPA<\/strong><\/a>, which aims to ensure the industry is run to high standards and above board.<\/p>\n Part of WASPA’s work sees the association publishing an\u00a0application block list.<\/p>\n The list contains the names of domains where fraud is occurring in terms of content services.<\/p>\n The high-risk domains are sent to industry players – including mobile network operators – and WASPA members are required to block the listed applications.<\/p>\n A potential way to protect consumers from these harmful domains is for mobile networks to block traffic to them – so we asked the major networks what their stance on the WASPA list is.<\/p>\n Cell C said it receives the\u00a0WASPA “high-risk” list and blocks domains and applications accordingly.<\/p>\n The number of domains blocked on a monthly basis depends on the list\u00a0WASPA sends it, as well other domains it identifies as potentially harmful.<\/p>\n Vodacom said it also receives the list from WASPA.<\/p>\n “Vodacom has a zero-tolerance approach to any type of illegal activity that happens on our network,” it said.<\/p>\n “We have previously suspended and terminated the services of WASPs and their affiliate content aggregators, and will continue to investigate reported transgressions and take appropriate action.”<\/p>\n Vodacom added that it will soon introduce a new\u00a0anti-fraud solution “capable of automatically identifying, blocking, and monitoring malware and fraudulent applications”.<\/p>\n “To unsubscribe from a WASP service, customers can send an SMS with the words Stop All to 31050,” said Vodacom.<\/p>\n MTN said it works with third-party services and WASPA when it comes to WASP services.<\/p>\n “MTN takes consumer protection and unscrupulous billing extremely seriously,” said MTN.<\/p>\n “We are currently in the process of developing a permanent solution for WASPs and related issues – however, this is still in the testing phase and will be operational in the next few months.”<\/p>\n “Should any third party be found guilty of any unauthorised billing, necessary measures will be taken against that service or company, including possible suspension on the MTN network.”<\/p>\n Telkom said it does receive the list from WASPA, and has worked with it on a fraud prevention workshop.<\/p>\n The company added that it has a\u00a0double-opt-in process for WASPs to ensure that clients are aware of when they purchase a service from their smartphone.<\/p>\n “This process also ensures that no subscriber is automatically subscribed to an unwanted WASP,” said Telkom.<\/p>\n Telkom said it has revised its contracts with WASPs, which is aimed at implementing new business rules “designed to prevent fraud over this platform”.<\/p>\n “These new contracts will become effective from 1 April 2018.”<\/p>\n WASPs can be a real nuisance for consumers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":23,"featured_media":173020,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[49317],"tags":[35,42,41,5054,1285],"class_list":["post-253985","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-it-services","tag-headline","tag-mtn","tag-vodacom","tag-wasp","tag-waspa"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/253985"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/23"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=253985"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/253985\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":254603,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/253985\/revisions\/254603"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/173020"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=253985"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=253985"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=253985"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
