{"id":257235,"date":"2018-04-29T12:48:14","date_gmt":"2018-04-29T10:48:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=257235"},"modified":"2018-04-29T12:50:43","modified_gmt":"2018-04-29T10:50:43","slug":"how-to-lock-down-your-facebook-account-for-maximum-privacy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/security\/257235-how-to-lock-down-your-facebook-account-for-maximum-privacy.html","title":{"rendered":"How to lock down your Facebook account for maximum privacy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Facebook recently created a set of shortcuts to help users control their privacy settings on the platform.<\/p>\n<p>The change follows reports that <a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/security\/255175-facebook-contacting-87-million-users-over-cambridge-analytica-leak.html\"><strong>third parties like Cambridge Analytica<\/strong><\/a> were able to harvest people\u2019s information from the platform by abusing Facebook\u2019s APIs.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers also reported that third-party tracking services used the \u201cLogin with Facebook\u201d functionality to <a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/security\/256937-web-trackers-abuse-facebook-login-to-harvest-data.html\"><strong>extract information about people<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The privacy shortcuts menu does not address the most recent issue discovered by researchers, but it does surface privacy settings that should be reviewed regularly.<\/p>\n<p>The settings below in Facebook will give you maximum privacy on the platform.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Privacy Check-up<\/h3>\n<p>In a desktop browser, clicking the question mark in the top right corner opens the \u201cQuick help\u201d menu, which contains the new privacy shortcuts menu. It also houses the Privacy Check-up wizard.<\/p>\n<p>Privacy Check-up takes you through three basic settings:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Who can see your new posts by default. Usually this is set to public. It can be changed on a post-by-post basis.<\/li>\n<li>Apps you\u2019ve logged into using Facebook. Set who can see apps you\u2019ve used, and delete any you no longer want.<\/li>\n<li>Profile information visibility &#8211; who can see your phone number, email address, birth date, and home town.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Facebook-Privacy-checkup.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-257241\" src=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Facebook-Privacy-checkup-435x430.jpg\" alt=\"Facebook Privacy checkup\" width=\"435\" height=\"430\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Facebook-Privacy-checkup-435x430.jpg 435w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Facebook-Privacy-checkup-405x400.jpg 405w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Facebook-Privacy-checkup-50x50.jpg 50w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Facebook-Privacy-checkup.jpg 702w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 435px) 100vw, 435px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Privacy shortcuts<\/h3>\n<p>The\u00a0Privacy menu also lets you set who can see your future posts, while providing links to your activity log.<\/p>\n<p>Activity Log lets you review who can see or find things you have posted or been tagged in.<\/p>\n<p>The privacy shortcuts also lets you set who can send you friend requests, and allows you to block a user.<\/p>\n<p>Blocking unfriends a profile and prevents them from starting conversations with you, or seeing things you post on your timeline.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Facebook-Privacy-Shortcuts.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-257249\" src=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Facebook-Privacy-Shortcuts.jpg\" alt=\"Facebook Privacy Shortcuts\" width=\"381\" height=\"356\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Timeline review<\/h3>\n<p>Under Activity Log is a menu item called \u201cTimeline Review\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>This lets you set whether you must manually approve posts you\u2019re tagged in before they go on your timeline.<\/p>\n<p>This only controls what\u2019s allowed on your timeline. Posts you\u2019re tagged in still appear in search, News Feed, and other places on Facebook.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" Settings and Tools<\/h3>\n<p>In Facebook\u2019s main settings pane are several menus containing privacy settings.<\/p>\n<p>This includes settings from the Privacy menu, as well as several other options.<\/p>\n<p>Amongst other options, the Privacy Settings and Tools menu lets you:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Limit the audience of past posts by setting posts you shared publicly, or with friends of friends, to only be shared with friends.<\/li>\n<li>Set who can see your friends list.<\/li>\n<li>Set who can look you up using your email address or phone number.<\/li>\n<li>Set whether you want search engines outside Facebook to link to your profile.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" class=\"my-4\">Timeline and tagging<\/h3>\n<p>Facebook also offers granular controls over your timeline, such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Who can post on your timeline.<\/li>\n<li>Who can see what others post on your timeline.<\/li>\n<li>Who can see posts that you\u2019re tagged in on your timeline.<\/li>\n<li>Review tags that people add to your posts before the tags appear on recognition<\/h3>\n<p>Under the Face Recognition menu, you can set whether you want Facebook to recognise you in photos and videos.<\/p>\n<p>You can review photos that you\u2019ve been detected in under the Activity Log, and choose whether you would like to be tagged in them or not.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" class=\"my-4\">Ads<\/h3>\n<p>Under its Ads Settings, Facebook lets you specify which of your personal information may be used to target advertisements at you.<\/p>\n<p>It also lets you allow or disallow whether people can see your interaction with an ad, or whether it may use data from partners to target you.<\/p>\n<p>You can also customise your interests, advertisers you\u2019ve interacted with, and hide ads related to alcohol, parenting, or pets.
