{"id":262817,"date":"2018-06-01T12:19:20","date_gmt":"2018-06-01T10:19:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=262817"},"modified":"2018-06-01T12:27:08","modified_gmt":"2018-06-01T10:27:08","slug":"apple-has-blocked-updates-to-telegram-since-april","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/software\/262817-apple-has-blocked-updates-to-telegram-since-april.html","title":{"rendered":"Apple has blocked updates to Telegram since April"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Telegram founder Pavel Durov said in a recent <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/t.me\/durov\/87\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">post<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0that Apple has blocked the messaging services from releasing updates for its iOS apps.<\/p>\n<p>The block came after Russian authorities ordered Apple to remove Telegram from the App Store.<\/p>\n<p>Russia banned the app when Telegram refused to comply with a court order to allow authorities to decrypt private messages between users.<\/p>\n<p>The crackdown on Telegram resulted in the blocking of IP addresses from cloud services providers, including Google and Amazon, in Russia.<\/p>\n<p>Amazon and Google then disabled <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/security\/259019-how-telegram-and-signal-used-domain-fronting-to-beat-censors.html\">domain fronting,<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>the feature Telegram was using to make it difficult for censors to block its services.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, Durov said Apple didn&#8217;t side with Telegram.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;While Russia makes up only 7% of Telegram\u2019s user base, Apple is restricting updates for all Telegram users around the world,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As a result, we\u2019ve also been unable to fully comply with GDPR for our EU users by the deadline of 25 May 2018.
