{"id":263661,"date":"2018-06-07T17:00:27","date_gmt":"2018-06-07T15:00:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=263661"},"modified":"2018-06-07T17:02:03","modified_gmt":"2018-06-07T15:02:03","slug":"vodacom-must-stop-calling-itself-sas-best-network-asa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cellular\/263661-vodacom-must-stop-calling-itself-sas-best-network-asa.html","title":{"rendered":"Vodacom must stop calling itself &#8220;SA&#8217;s Best Network&#8221; &#8211;\u00a0ASA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Advertising Standards Authority of South Africa has ruled that Vodacom\u2019s claim it was South Africa\u2019s best network for three years in a row is misleading, and must be retracted.<\/p>\n<p>This comes after MTN lodged a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cellular\/250487-bruising-best-network-battle-between-vodacom-and-mtn.html\">complaint<\/a><\/strong> with the ASA against Vodacom\u2019s advertisement in which it claimed to have South Africa\u2019s best network &#8211; citing SA Consumer Satisfaction Index (SAcsi) data.<\/p>\n<p>MTN argued that Vodacom had previously relied on network speed test data to back its claims, but when data from Ookla and MyBroadband no longer substantiated its advertisements, it switched to SAcsi&#8217;s measures.<\/p>\n<p>This created a situation where real-world network quality tests from MyBroadband showed MTN had the best network, while Vodacom claimed to have the best network based on a consumer survey.<\/p>\n<p>In its complaint to the ASA, MTN said Vodacom\u2019s sudden switch to SAcsi data after years of relaying on speed test platforms for its advertisements was misleading to consumers.<\/p>\n<p>The ASA Directorate disagreed, however, and said that Vodacom could continue to run its advertising campaign.<\/p>\n<p>Upon appeal, the ASA Tribunal overturned the original decision of the Directorate.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Speed tests<\/h3>\n<p>The Tribunal said the fact that Vodacom had to concede it could no longer lay claim to being South Africa\u2019s fastest mobile network undermined the statement that it was the country\u2019s best network.<\/p>\n<p>It also took issue with Vodacom\u2019s claim that SAcsi rated it as the best network for three years in a row.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Tribunal, there is an important distinction to be made &#8211; SAcsi analysed three years of data and rated Vodacom as the best network in 2017.
