{"id":267127,"date":"2018-07-04T09:38:32","date_gmt":"2018-07-04T07:38:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=267127"},"modified":"2018-07-04T09:42:51","modified_gmt":"2018-07-04T07:42:51","slug":"google-responds-to-fears-over-app-developers-accessing-your-gmail","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/security\/267127-google-responds-to-fears-over-app-developers-accessing-your-gmail.html","title":{"rendered":"Google responds to fears over app developers accessing your Gmail"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Google has published a blog post in response to a The Wall Street Journal <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/techs-dirty-secret-the-app-developers-sifting-through-your-gmail-1530544442\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">article<\/a><\/strong> which stated the company allows third-party developers to scan Gmail inboxes.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We make it possible for applications from other developers to integrate with Gmail &#8211; like email clients, trip planners and CRM systems &#8211; so that you have options around how you access and use your email,&#8221; <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blog.google\/technology\/safety-security\/ensuring-your-security-and-privacy-within-gmail\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said Google<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The company said before any non-Google app which can access Gmail is published, it goes through a rigorous vetting process. The must:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Accurately represent themselves.<\/strong> Apps should not misrepresent their identity and must be clear about how they are using your data.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Only request relevant data.<\/strong> Apps should ask only for the data they need for their specific function.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Google said that users retain full control over who has access to their data at all times.<\/p>\n<p>Before a non-Google app may access data, Google shows a permissions screen that displays the types of data the app can access and how it can use that data.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In addition, we\u2019ve long had data controls that you can use at any time to manage your information.
