{"id":273655,"date":"2018-08-30T07:59:38","date_gmt":"2018-08-30T05:59:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=273655"},"modified":"2018-08-30T08:01:10","modified_gmt":"2018-08-30T06:01:10","slug":"julia-1-0-the-programming-language-with-the-ease-of-python-and-the-speed-of-c","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/software\/273655-julia-1-0-the-programming-language-with-the-ease-of-python-and-the-speed-of-c.html","title":{"rendered":"Julia 1.0 &#8211; the programming language with the ease of Python and the speed of C++"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After years of tinkering, the dynamic programming language Julia 1.0 was officially\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/julialang.org\/blog\/2018\/08\/one-point-zero\">released<\/a>\u00a0to the public during<a href=\"http:\/\/juliacon.org\/2018\/\">\u00a0JuliaCon<\/a>, an annual conference of Julia users held recently in London.<\/p>\n<p>The release of Julia 1.0 is a huge Julia milestone since MIT Professor Alan Edelman, Jeff Bezanson, Stefan Karpinski, and Viral Shah\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/julialang.org\/blog\/2012\/02\/why-we-created-julia\">released\u00a0Julia to developers<\/a>\u00a0in 2012, says Edelman.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJulia has been revolutionizing scientific and technical computing since 2009,\u201d says\u00a0Edelman, the year\u00a0the creators started working on a new language that combined the best features of Ruby, MatLab, C, Python, R, and others. Edelman is\u00a0director of the<a href=\"https:\/\/julia.mit.edu\/\">\u00a0Julia Lab at MIT<\/a>\u00a0and one of the co-creators of the language at MIT\u2019s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab (CSAIL).<\/p>\n<p>Julia, which was developed and incubated at MIT, is free and open source, with more than 700 active open source contributors, 1,900 registered packages, 41,000\u00a0GitHub stars, 2 million downloads, and a reported 101 percent\u00a0annual rate of download growth. It is used at more than 700 universities and research institutions and by companies such as Aviva, BlackRock, Capital One, and Netflix.<\/p>\n<p>At MIT, Julia users and developers include professors Steven Johnson, Juan Pablo Vielma, Gilbert Strang, Robin Deits, Twan Koolen, and Robert Moss.
