{"id":273855,"date":"2018-08-31T10:33:13","date_gmt":"2018-08-31T08:33:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=273855"},"modified":"2018-08-31T10:34:42","modified_gmt":"2018-08-31T08:34:42","slug":"google-and-harvard-use-machine-learning-to-predict-aftershocks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/science\/273855-google-and-harvard-use-machine-learning-to-predict-aftershocks.html","title":{"rendered":"Google and Harvard use machine learning to predict aftershocks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Researchers from Harvard and Google have published a paper in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-018-0438-y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nature<\/a><\/strong> showing how they used deep learning to predict earthquake aftershock locations, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2018\/8\/30\/17799356\/ai-predict-earthquake-aftershocks-google-harvard\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Verge reported<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Their method is significantly more accurate than existing models, the researchers found.<\/p>\n<p>The scientists used 131,000 data points which consist of an earthquake and corresponding aftershock &#8211; a mainshock-aftershock event &#8211; to train a neural network.<\/p>\n<p>It was then tested on 30,000 data points and its accuracy measured against the model known as &#8220;Coulomb failure stress change.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Coulomb failure stress change was able to predict aftershocks with a 58.3% accuracy, while the deep neural network the researchers developed achieved 84.9% accuracy.<\/p>\n<p>It was able to do this by taking\u00a0the &#8220;Von Mises Yield Criterion&#8221; into account. The scientists said it is used in metallurgy to predict when materials will start breaking under stress, but hasn&#8217;t been popular in earthquake science.<\/p>\n<p>The machine learning model currently only considers static stress &#8211; permanent changes to the ground.
