Desire Android Gingerbread upgrade uncertainty"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Two weeks ago HTC riled customers by announcing that they would not be providing their popular HTC Desire with an update to the latest version of Google\u2019s Android smartphone operating system.<\/p>\n<p>This came after the smartphone maker said that the <a title=\"HTC Desire updates\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/gadgets\/18959-htc-desire-range-gingerbread-update-plans-for-sa-revealed.html\">HTC Desire would receive an update by the end of May<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>HTC UK stated on their <a title=\"Facebook page\" href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/notes\/htc-uk\/desire-and-gingerbread-update\/225607660802056\">Facebook page<\/a> that they couldn\u2019t bring Android 2.3 Gingerbread to the HTC Desire \u201cwithout compromising the HTC Sense experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>HTC Sense is the set of user interface customisations HTC makes to their devices.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-caption-text\">HTC Desire<\/p><\/div>\n<p>According to the Facebook announcement, HTC had been \u201cforced to accept\u201d that there wasn\u2019t enough memory on the HTC Desire to offer full HTC Sense and Android Gingerbread.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, the HTC Wildfire S, one of HTC\u2019s newer devices, has similar memory specifications to the HTC Desire and runs Android Gingerbread and HTC Sense 2.1.<\/p>\n<p>Needless to say, the Facebook announcement attracted outraged responses on the social networking website and HTC quickly posted a <a title=\"HTC Facebook\" href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/htcuk\/posts\/225857300777092\">follow-up on Facebook<\/a>: \u201cContrary to what we said earlier, we are going to bring Gingerbread to HTC Desire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>HTC went on to <a title=\"HTC on Facebook\" href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/htcuk\/posts\/226147870748035\">announce<\/a> that, \u201cTo resolve Desire&#8217;s memory issue and enable the upgrade to Gingerbread, we will cut select apps from the release.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then on Friday last week another update was posted to the HTC UK Facebook page saying that the roll-out time frame of the new Gingerbread ROM would be <a title=\"HTC on Facebook\" href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/htcuk\/posts\/232270456792349\">released early this week<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Leaf International Communications has been unable to confirm how this saga will impact South African HTC Desire users.<\/p>\n<p>However, HTC firmware updates in South Africa tend to follow European releases, so it is expected that the ROM being developed for UK devices wil come to SA eventually.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>HTC UK works to clear up the uncertainty around the Android 2.3
