{"id":276983,"date":"2018-09-22T10:34:23","date_gmt":"2018-09-22T08:34:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=276983"},"modified":"2018-09-22T10:37:15","modified_gmt":"2018-09-22T08:37:15","slug":"mtn-stops-free-twitter-changes-whatsapp-bundle-prices","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/it-services\/276983-mtn-stops-free-twitter-changes-whatsapp-bundle-prices.html","title":{"rendered":"MTN stops free Twitter, changes WhatsApp bundle prices"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MTN will stop offering customers free Twitter usage.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;After providing free Twitter to millions of subscribers for an unprecedented four years, MTN\u2019s industry-first free Twitter service will come to an end at midnight on\u00a025 September,&#8221; said MTN.<\/p>\n<p>MTN said it had over 13 million Twitter users on its network in August 2018, with 1.9 petabytes of data being used on the network per month.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Overall usage trends towards video and images have determined that it is no longer feasible to offer a service like Twitter for free due to the cost and demand it places on the network.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The cancellation of the free Twitter service follows\u00a0MTN recently placing a 500MB daily <a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cellular\/268449-mtn-put-a-500mb-cap-on-free-twitter-because-of-hackers.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>usage cap<\/strong><\/a> on its free Twitter offering &#8211; following the exploitation of the service by hackers.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">WhatsApp and Twitter bundles<\/h3>\n<p>MTN also announced changes to the pricing and sizing of its WhatsApp and Twitter bundles.<\/p>\n<p>From 1 October 2018,\u00a0MTN\u2019s Twitter and WhatsApp bundles will be amended to the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Weekly WhatsApp bundle<\/strong> &#8211; 100MB for R5 changes to 250MB for R10.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Daily WhatsApp bundle<\/strong> &#8211; 20MB for R1 changes to 50MB for R2.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Weekly Twitter bundle<\/strong> &#8211; 100MB for R5 changes to 500MB for R20.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Daily Twitter bundle<\/strong> &#8211; 20MB for R1 changes to 100MB for R5.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cWhile our pricing has increased, we were mindful of ensuring that our offering remained competitive and affordable.
