Three GPS personal navigation device (PND) vendors offer live traffic services in South Africa, with each offering a slightly different pricing structure.<\/p>\n

TomTom<\/h3>\n

TomTom was first to market with their Live HD Traffic service in 2010 and bundles the service with their higher end \u201cLive\u201d devices, such as the Go Live or Via Live range.<\/p>\n

Purchase of a TomTom device only provides a year\u2019s subscription to the vendor\u2019s traffic service, however. Annual subscriptions to TomTom live traffic currently sit at R499.<\/p>\n

This makes TomTom\u2019s traffic services the most expensive in SA, but users are able to try it out online through TomTom\u2019s route planner<\/a> before deciding to buy.<\/p>\n

Garmin<\/h3>\n

Next in line was Garmin who now offer two types of subscription to their traffic services.<\/p>\n

The new range of Garmin devices include \u201cLT\u201d models which have a lifetime subscription to Garmin\u2019s Premium Live Traffic bundled with them.<\/p>\n

According to Garmin, \u201clifetime\u201d indicates the lifetime of the device or the information feed from the traffic service provider.<\/p>\n

Garmin also offers annual traffic subscriptions for other supported devices at R299 per year.<\/p>\n

Navigon<\/h3>\n

Navigon offers traffic services using the same information provider as Garmin: Altech Netstar.<\/p>\n

All of Navigon\u2019s traffic offerings are \u201clifetime\u201d subscriptions and come bundled with their Premium devices.<\/p>\n
