The South African broadcasting Corporation (SABC) has issued a notice to staff stating that it will retrench thousands of employees in an effort to save costs.<\/p>\n
This news comes after the\u00a0SABC met with unions in September<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0to discuss the retrenchment of employees to cut its high salary costs.<\/p>\n The state broadcaster confirmed<\/a><\/strong> it will proceed with Section 189 of the Labour Relations Act, retrenching up to 981 permanent employees and 1,200 of its 2,400 freelancers.<\/p>\n Around 3,400 permanent employees work at the SABC, meaning this restructuring will result in the broadcaster terminating almost a third of its workforce.<\/p>\n “It is envisaged that all employees and at all levels in the SABC will be affected by the restructuring,” the SABC said in a statement.<\/p>\n “This would include Group Services, Provincial Operations, Commercial Enterprises, Media Technology and Infrastructure, News, Radio, Sport and Television.”<\/p>\n “It is envisaged that 981 employees may possibly be retrenched as a result of the restructuring, across all the aforesaid business units and operations of the SABC,” the broadcaster added.<\/p>\n The SABC plans to complete this process by the end of January 2019 in an effort to turn around its financial situation.<\/p>\n These measures will also address \u201cendemic levels of corruption and maladministration that have been prevalent at the SABC for many years\u201d.<\/p>\n The SABC has been in a dire financial situation for some time, posting a massive R622-million loss<\/strong><\/a> for the year ended 31 March 2018.<\/p>\n Its financial situation is so dire that Auditor-General Kimi Makwetu said the SABC was commercially insolvent as it was unable to pay its debts on time.<\/p>\n This is despite the high salaries earned by SABC executives<\/strong><\/a> and senior management, many of whom received over R1 million in total remuneration for the past financial year.<\/p>\n According to SABC chairman Bongumusa Makhathini, the SABC board has implemented measures to stabilise the corporation.<\/p>\n \u201cThe corporation is still paying the price for years of ineffective leadership, failed governance, and prejudicial decision making,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n \u201cSelf-inflicted actions like the arbitrary 90-10 decision continue to impact on the SABC\u2019s revenue,\u201d he added, addressing the impact of local content quotas.<\/p>\n In its statement regarding the layoffs, the SABC said it should save around R440 million per year following the restructuring.<\/p>\n “This exercise should result in a cost saving of approximately R440 million per annum, even at this preliminary stage,” the broadcaster said.<\/p>\n “This amount excludes the projected cost savings from the planned reduction of freelancers.”<\/p>\n The SABC said it would comply with all relevant legal requirements and would ensure that employees are kept abreast of developments surrounding the restructuring.<\/p>\n The South African broadcasting Corporation (SABC) has issued a notice to staff stating that it will retrench thousands of employees in an effort to save costs.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":23,"featured_media":173656,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_sma_x_autopost_status":"idle","_sma_x_autopost_error":"","_sma_x_post_id":"","_sma_facebook_post_id":"","_sma_instagram_post_id":"","_sma_threads_post_id":"","_sma_x_attempts":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[24],"tags":[35,12083,145,361],"class_list":["post-282327","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-broadcasting","tag-headline","tag-job-cuts","tag-retrenchments","tag-sabc"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/282327"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/23"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=282327"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/282327\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/173656"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=282327"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=282327"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=282327"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}Cost savings<\/h3>\n
