Google is hoping Android will become the dominant operating system for mobile phones. It is designed to improve the quality of the Internet experience on handsets.<\/p>\n
"We are seeing a number of technology companies demonstrating how Android will operate on their technology," Google spokesman Barry Schnitt told AFP on the sidelines of the Mobile World Congress. "Clearly momentum is building."<\/p>\n
Google announced a 34-member group called the "Open Handset Alliance" in November last year to develop Android, including China Mobile, HTC, Intel, Motorola, Qualcomm, T-Mobile, Telefonica, LG and eBay.<\/p>\n
ARM, Marvell, Texas Instruments, Qualcomm, NEC, ST Microelectronics were showing prototypes today, the companies and sources confirmed.<\/p>\n
"We're demonstrating a prototype of Android," a spokesman for ARM told AFP.<\/p>\n
US chip maker Texas Instruments is to demonstrate another prototype phone later today in public.<\/p>\n
Analysts say the establishment of Android as the industry standard would enable Google to become the key search engine on mobile phones, enabling it to earn advertising revenues.<\/p>\n
The first Android-enabled phone is expected to go on sale in the second half of this year.<\/p>\n
