{"id":28466,"date":"2011-07-06T21:48:50","date_gmt":"2011-07-06T19:48:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=28466"},"modified":"2011-07-06T21:50:24","modified_gmt":"2011-07-06T19:50:24","slug":"ios-security-weaknesses-warning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/security\/28466-ios-security-weaknesses-warning.html","title":{"rendered":"iOS security weaknesses warning"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The software running Apple&#8217;s iPhones, iPads and the  iPod Touch has &#8220;critical weaknesses&#8221; that could be used by criminals to  gain access to confidential data on the devices, Germany&#8217;s IT security  agency warned Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Clicking on an infected PDF file &#8220;is sufficient to  infect the mobile device with malware without the user&#8217;s knowledge&#8221; on  several versions of Apple&#8217;s iOS operating system, the Federal Office for  Information Security said.<\/p>\n<p>The same could occur when opening a website that  carries an infected PDF file, possibly opening the device to criminals  spying on passwords, planners, photos, text messages, emails and even  listen in on phone conversations.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The weak points allow possible attackers to gain administrator rights and get access to the entire system,&#8221; it said.<\/p>\n<p>The problem may occur on all devices &#8211; iPhone 3GS,  iPhone 4, iPad, iPad 2 and the iPod Touch &#8211; with software versions  including iOS 4.3.3, and it &#8220;cannot be excluded&#8221; that other iOS versions  have the same weakness, it said.<\/p>\n<p>Apple Inc. has yet to offer a patch to fix the problem, the agency added.<\/p>\n<p>Apple Germany spokesman Georg Albrecht told The  Associated Press he was aware of the warning, adding that Apple would  not comment on it.<\/p>\n<p>The agency said it was in contact with the firm regarding the security hole.<\/p>\n<p>No attacks taking advantage of it have been reported so  far, &#8220;but it must be expected that attackers will soon exploit the weak  points,&#8221; it said.<\/p>\n<p>The agency urges the devices&#8217; users to refrain from  opening PDF files of unknown origin, be it as an email attachment or  those opening through websites.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Possible scenarios for attacks by cyber criminals  include the extraction of confidential information (passwords, online  banking data, calendars, e-mails, SMS or contacts), accessing the  device&#8217;s cameras, the user&#8217;s GPS data as well as listening in on phone  conversations,&#8221; the statement said.<\/p>\n<p>The Bonn-based institution reported a similar security  hole last year, for which Apple soon afterward presented a software  upgrade fixing it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The software running Apple&#8217;s iPhones, iPads and the iPod Touch has &#8220;critical weaknesses&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":35,"featured_media":28468,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[27],"tags":[36,605,691,39,229,1125],"class_list":["post-28466","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-security","tag-active","tag-apple","tag-ios","tag-ipad","tag-ipad-2","tag-iphone"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/28466"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/35"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=28466"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/28466\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":28470,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/28466\/revisions\/28470"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/28468"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=28466"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=28466"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=28466"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
