The web browser is considered by many to be the most important piece of software on a computer.<\/p>\n

Google<\/a> has even gone so far as to build an operating system and a brand of netbook PCs whose main purpose is running their Chrome browser<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Many of the major browser makers have launched new versions of their software in the last month: Mozilla launched Firefox 5<\/a>, Google released Chrome 12, and Opera took the \u201cbeta\u201d flag off version 11.50 of their browser.<\/p>\n

Since none of these browser versions were released at the start of the month however, the impact their launch will have on the overall marketshare still remains to be seen.<\/p>\n

Microsoft<\/a> made the first stable release of Internet Explorer 9<\/a> available earlier this year (March 2011), but the refresh of their dominant browser seemed to do little to stem the decline in its usage share.<\/p>\n

The table below shows the browser usage share worldwide and in South Africa, according to StatCounter. StatCounter claims to have a sample with over 15 billion pageviews per month across 3 million websites.<\/p>\n

Though there are disputes regarding the accuracy of the statistics collected by organisations like StatCounter, they remain useful to spot trends in browser usage.<\/p>\n

When one looks at the data for the last 12 months for instance, it shows that Internet Explorer has been rapidly losing market share while Chrome has been gaining.<\/p>\n

In the last few months Firefox and Opera have also lost out on usage, while Safari has slowly increased its share.<\/p>\n

We wanted to see how MyBroadband\u2019s userbase compared to the global stats, so the table and graph below show the browser usage statistics for mybroadband.co.za for June 2011.<\/p>\n

When compared with stats from earlier in the year<\/a>, MyBroadband\u2019s statistics paint a similar picture to those of StatCounter, though Firefox, IE and Chrome compete on a more even footing than they seem to globally.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
