{"id":292918,"date":"2019-01-21T12:54:38","date_gmt":"2019-01-21T10:54:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=292918"},"modified":"2019-01-21T12:56:27","modified_gmt":"2019-01-21T10:56:27","slug":"everything-developers-are-not-allowed-to-do-with-dstv-and-showmax","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/software\/292918-everything-developers-are-not-allowed-to-do-with-dstv-and-showmax.html","title":{"rendered":"Everything developers are not allowed to do with DStv and Showmax"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hobbyist Kodi app developer Matt Huisman recently faced intellectual property enforcement action from Naspers due to add-ons he created for DStv Now and Showmax.<\/p>\n<p>While MultiChoice does not directly get involved in enforcement, sister company Irdeto acted on its behalf by <a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadcasting\/291506-multichoice-kills-third-party-dstv-now-and-showmax-kodi-add-ons.html\"><strong>sending takedown notices<\/strong><\/a> to Huisman and Github.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, Github blocked access to the repositories containing the code for Kodi add-ons. Huisman also immediately complied, removing the offending add-ons from his servers.<\/p>\n<p>Irdeto didn\u2019t stop there, however.<\/p>\n<p>It sent a notice to PayPal, claiming that Huisman had violated MultiChoice\u2019s intellectual property rights. Huisman does not charge for the add-ons he develops, but he accepts donations through PayPal.<\/p>\n<p>PayPal terminated Huisman\u2019s account and offered him no recourse to contest the claim.<\/p>\n<p>According to Huisman, PayPal\u2019s process works similarly to YouTube. For Huisman to get his account back, Irdeto must revoke their claim.<\/p>\n<p>PayPal did not respond to requests for comment on the matter.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Terms and Conditions<\/h3>\n<p>MultiChoice\u2019s <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/go.dstv.com\/multichoice\/documents\/DStv_Now_Nov2017_v1.4_RELEASE.pdf?_ga=2.265456719.1503219069.1548055883-1254728038.1522145500\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">terms and conditions<\/a><\/strong> for the DStv Now app are quite particular about what kind of usage is allowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe User may not use DStv Now, its Contents, or any aspect thereof, in any manner that constitutes a violation of any law\u2026 or an infringement of MultiChoice\u2019s rights,\u201d it states.<\/p>\n<p>It goes on to say that you may not reproduce, modify, copy, transfer (to any person or onto any device, whether corporeal or incorporeal), perform, transmit, broadcast, upload or redistribute the contents, whether for personal use or commercial gain.<\/p>\n<p>The DStv Now terms also state that you may not modify, disassemble, copy, or reproduce its systems.
