{"id":294296,"date":"2019-01-31T18:59:04","date_gmt":"2019-01-31T16:59:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=294296"},"modified":"2019-02-01T12:56:48","modified_gmt":"2019-02-01T10:56:48","slug":"dns-flag-day-telkom-website-does-not-support-latest-security-features","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cloud-hosting\/294296-dns-flag-day-telkom-website-does-not-support-latest-security-features.html","title":{"rendered":"DNS Flag Day &#8211;\u00a0Telkom website does not support latest security features"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A coalition of Internet companies recently announced they will stop supporting workarounds to accommodate a Domain Name System (DNS) operators who do not comply with the latest standards.<\/p>\n<p>DNS is the system that translates domain names into Internet Protocol addresses that can be processed by devices.<\/p>\n<p>The changes will be implemented from 1 February 2019, a date dubbed <a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/internet\/292866-major-dns-overhaul-to-hit-the-internet.html\"><strong>DNS Flag Day.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The companies said that DNS is unnecessarily slow and inefficient because of efforts to accommodate a few systems that are not in compliance with DNS standards established two decades ago.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis change will affect domains hosted on authoritative servers which do not comply either with original DNS standards from 1987, or the newer EDNS standards from 1999,\u201d they said.<\/p>\n<p>Companies who form part of the coalition include Cisco, Cloudflare, Facebook, Google, and Quad9.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dnsflagday.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>The DNS Flag Day website<\/strong><\/a> includes a way to test domains for compliance with the new standards.<\/p>\n<p>Testing the domains of South Africa\u2019s largest hosting and Internet service providers resulted in an error message for a big player&#8217;s website &#8211;\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ednscomp.isc.org\/ednscomp\/29f6884ca7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Telkom<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis domain does not support latest DNS standards. As a consequence this domain cannot support the latest security features and might be an easier target for network attackers than necessary,\u201d the DNS Flag Day website warns.<\/p>\n<p>To find out if organisations are prepared for the change, we spoke to South Africa&#8217;s Internet players.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">INX-ZA<\/h3>\n<p>Nishal Goburdhan, Internet exchange point manager for INX-ZA, said that all the INX servers are fully compliant and ready for DNS Flag Day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe INX nameservers are authoritative not only for the Internet exchanges, but the South African government (gov.za) and many IXPs and community-benefit projects in Africa,\u201d said Goburdhan.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/INX-ZA-logo-on-breast.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-180534\" src=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/INX-ZA-logo-on-breast.jpg\" alt=\"INX-ZA logo\" width=\"640\" height=\"430\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Teraco<\/h3>\n<p>Teraco and NAPAfrica\u2019s technical manager for interconnection and peering Andrew Owens told MyBroadband that their internal network and DNS is ready.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur outgoing DNS services are hosted by Cloudflare, one of the movement\u2019s strongest supporters, and is therefore compliant. Our reverse DNS is hosted internally and has also been tested to ensure 100% compliance,\u201d Owens said.<\/p>\n<p>Owens clarified that Teraco does not offer any hosting or networking services to clients within the data centre, so clients will be responsible for their own DNS Flag Day readiness.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Teraco-logo.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-145117\" src=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Teraco-logo.jpg\" alt=\"Teraco logo\" width=\"640\" height=\"430\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Hetzner<\/h3>\n<p>Hetzner said its network and hosting environment is ready for DNS Flag Day.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Hetzner-logo-on-building.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-143809\" src=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Hetzner-logo-on-building.jpg\" alt=\"Hetzner logo on building\" width=\"640\" height=\"430\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Internet Solutions<\/h3>\n<p>Internet Solutions said its DNS servers are ready.
