Apple have confirmed that the newest version of their PC operating system (OS), Mac OS X Lion, will launch later today (Wednesday, 20 July 2011).<\/p>\n

This comes after rumours suggested<\/a> the OS would launch last week (14 July), which were then revised to today.<\/p>\n

Mac OS X Lion<\/a> is set to include improved multi-touch gestures, full-screen applications and Expos\u00e9 with grouped windows (called Mission Control).<\/p>\n

It was also announced that Lion would include new features such as Launchpad, an iOS-like application launcher, built-in autosaving and file version control, and Resume, which will restore an application or work environment after shutting it down and restarting.<\/p>\n

Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple, revealed earlier this year that Lion wouldn’t be available for purchase on optical media such as DVD, but would have to be bought through the Mac App Store for $29.99 and downloaded over the Internet.<\/p>\n

According to Jobs, Mac OS X Lion will be about a 4GB download<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Peter Oppenheimer, chief financial officer of Apple, said during their Q3 2011 financial results conference call that \u201cunspecified minor software updates and features\u201d will be available for free to Mac OS X Lion customers.<\/p>\n

He added that Apple will continue to charge for their major OS upgrades, such as Lion, as well as major upgrades of iLife, Apple\u2019s suite of multimedia applications which includes iPhoto, iMovie and GarageBand.<\/p>\n

Answering questions from analysts, Oppenheimer hinted at a \u201cfuture product transition\u201d which would affect revenue in their September quarter, but said that they wouldn\u2019t be discussing it in any detail today.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
