Google has announced through a blog post<\/a> written by Bill Coughran, Google’s senior vice president for Research and Systems Infrastructure, that it will shut down Google labs.<\/p>\n

According to Coughran, “the company has learned a lot by launching very early prototypes in the Labs. The company’s greater focus is crucial if we’re to make the most of the extraordinary opportunities ahead.”<\/p>\n

While some Google lab projects will end with immediate affect, others will be adopted by other areas of focus within Google’s product portfolio. Support for existing android apps developed by Google labs will also continue into the foreseeable future.<\/p>\n

After the release of the company’s earnings last week, Google CEO Larry Page moved to reassure investors that the company is focussing on products that will yield the largest returns on investments.<\/p>\n

Page said, “Overall, we are focused on long-term, absolute profit and growth, as we have always been. It’s easy to focus on things that we do that are speculative, e.g., driverless cars. But we spend the vast majority of our resources on the core products.”<\/p>\n

Other services to meet the axe recently have included Google Health and Google PowerMeter, as they had struggled to take off.<\/p>\n

“We may have a few small speculative projects happening at any given time, but we are very careful stewards of shareholder money. We are not betting the farm on this stuff,” Page concluded.<\/p>\n
