{"id":301746,"date":"2019-04-04T13:53:08","date_gmt":"2019-04-04T11:53:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=301746"},"modified":"2019-06-27T20:16:19","modified_gmt":"2019-06-27T18:16:19","slug":"when-all-telkom-users-will-be-able-to-roam-on-vodacom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cellular\/301746-when-all-telkom-users-will-be-able-to-roam-on-vodacom.html","title":{"rendered":"When all Telkom users will be able to roam on Vodacom"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In November 2018, Vodacom and Telkom <a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/business-telecoms\/283745-telkom-signs-big-lte-roaming-agreement-with-vodacom.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>announced<\/strong><\/a> a major roaming agreement which would allow Telkom customers to roam on Vodacom&#8217;s LTE network.<\/p>\n<p>The companies said the roaming agreement would be in full effect from June 2019 and Telkom stated it would begin conducting a phased transition beginning from 1 December 2018.<\/p>\n<p>Telkom&#8217;s new roaming agreement also marked the end of its roaming agreement with MTN, which is set to expire in June 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Telkom CEO Sipho Maseko said seamless handover and 4G technology are new additions to Telkom\u2019s roaming agreement with Vodacom, which would \u201cimprove the customer experience on the Telkom network\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Vodacom CEO Shameel Joosub <a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cellular\/284452-telkom-and-vodacom-roaming-agreement-will-not-affect-network-performance.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>also told MyBroadband<\/strong><\/a> that the roaming agreement with Telkom would not affect the performance of its network, following concerns raised by users.<\/p>\n<p>Joosub said that while the amount of traffic would increase due to Telkom\u2019s roaming agreement, it would replace Cell C usage which was now routed through MTN\u2019s infrastructure.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Waiting game<\/h3>\n<p>Telkom&#8217;s phased transition from roaming on MTN to Vodacom has been underway for over four months, but many customers have contacted MyBroadband stating that they are not yet benefiting from Vodacom&#8217;s network infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>MyBroadband asked Vodacom and Telkom about the current status of the roaming agreement and the expected timeline for full implementation.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Telkom<\/h3>\n<p>Telkom told MyBroadband that its transition process is currently underway, with roaming support rolling out to certain areas of the country.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Telkom has started the implementation of the national roaming agreement with Vodacom in their radio access network for 2G, 3G, and LTE,&#8221; Telkom said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have started the process of rolling out in Limpopo, Mpumalanga, Eastern Cape, and KwaZulu-Natal.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Telkom confirmed that the implementation of the roaming agreement across the rest of the country would be completed by the end of June 2019.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Telkom-office-mockup-logo.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-221555\" src=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Telkom-office-mockup-logo.jpg\" alt=\"Telkom office mockup logo\" width=\"640\" height=\"430\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Telkom-office-mockup-logo.jpg 640w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Telkom-office-mockup-logo-300x202.jpg 300w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Telkom-office-mockup-logo-595x400.jpg 595w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Vodacom<\/h3>\n<p>Vodacom told MyBroadband that the implementation of the roaming agreement is on schedule and users can expect it to be completed by the end of June.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Vodacom\u2019s roaming agreement with Telkom is progressing well and we expect that the switchover will be completed in June this year,&#8221;
