{"id":30654,"date":"2011-08-02T18:52:09","date_gmt":"2011-08-02T16:52:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=30654"},"modified":"2011-08-02T18:53:21","modified_gmt":"2011-08-02T16:53:21","slug":"vodacoms-fix-it-plan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cellular\/30654-vodacoms-fix-it-plan.html","title":{"rendered":"Vodacom&#8217;s Fix-it plan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a title=\"Vodacom\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/227063-Vodacom\">Vodacom<\/a> has instituted a fix-it plan to make network outages, dropped calls and disconnected services a thing of the past.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Portia Maurice\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/220644-Portia-Maurice\">Portia Maurice<\/a>, Vodacom\u2019s chief officer of corporate affairs told Moneyweb that since the most calamitous of Vodacom\u2019s network outages on June 30\u2014the last day for cellphone users to register their Sim cards under the new <a title=\"RICA Act\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/220639-Rica\">RICA Act<\/a> it has \u201cput a lot of time and effort into understanding the events of June 30&#8243;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We\u2019ve subsequently installed additional links to provide an additional backup layer and also installed software upgrades to improve resilience.\u00a0 We\u2019ve also had an international team of transmission experts do an audit of our network,&#8221; said Maurice.<\/p>\n<p>However, last weekend &#8211; July 23 was another network dead day for some Vodacom subscribers. Maurice said a number of unrelated incidents took place that day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a title=\"Reseaerch in Motion\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/313525-Research-in-Motion-%28RIM%29\">RIM<\/a> [the owners of <a title=\"BlackBerry smartphone device\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/342709-BlackBerry\">BlackBerry<\/a>] had some problems with the BlackBerry Messenger service, some base stations in Sandton were down for maintenance and a number of customers who had recently completed a SIM swap were temporarily unable to connect to the network,\u201d added Maurice.<\/p>\n<p>Asked if increased data usage could also explain the June 30 and other disruptions, Maurice says the company anticipated the boom in data growth and catered for it with its investment plans over a number of years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was one of the reasons we installed an extensive backbone of fibre optic transmission capacity and are upgrading the complete network to the latest available technology,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>Asked if Vodacom\u2019s R6bn investment in upgrading its networks could be affecting the quality of its service, Maurice stated that the two are not related, \u201cWe work hard to ensure that network upgrades don\u2019t result in temporary localised outages.\u201d Maurice added that the investment \u201cincludes all areas of the network such as the roll out of voice and data capacity, new coverage, and building more resilience into the network.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_27653\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cellular\/27647-non-ricaed-sims-after-30-june-what-to-expect.html\/attachment\/portia-maurice\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-27653\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-27653\" class=\"size-full wp-image-27653\" title=\"portia-maurice\" src=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/portia-maurice.jpg\" alt=\"Portia Maurice\" width=\"600\" height=\"349\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/portia-maurice.jpg 600w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/portia-maurice-100x58.jpg 100w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/portia-maurice-185x107.jpg 185w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-27653\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Portia Maurice<\/p><\/div>\n<p>What does this mean for consumers?<\/p>\n<p>Maurice said \u201cWith the actions taken since June 30, we are confident that we won\u2019t have similar interruptions. We work hard to ensure that network upgrades don\u2019t result in temporary localised outages,\u201d she added.
