{"id":306928,"date":"2019-05-22T12:29:44","date_gmt":"2019-05-22T10:29:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=306928"},"modified":"2019-05-29T19:26:55","modified_gmt":"2019-05-29T17:26:55","slug":"south-africas-biggest-ever-mobile-network-testing-project-launched","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cellular\/306928-south-africas-biggest-ever-mobile-network-testing-project-launched.html","title":{"rendered":"South Africa&#8217;s biggest ever mobile network testing project launched"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MyBroadband has partnered with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.afristay.com\/?utm_source=MyBroadband\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Afristay<\/strong><\/a> and Huawei Mobile Devices to launch South Africa\u2019s biggest mobile network testing project.<\/p>\n<p>Mobile Internet access is a cornerstone of a modern economy, and good network quality is necessary to support many of the latest mobile applications.<\/p>\n<p>To test the quality of South African mobile networks and find their strengths and shortcomings, MyBroadband has launched its 2019 mobile network testing project.<\/p>\n<p>The project will provide a comprehensive look at cellular network quality in South Africa, and include two main components:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Controlled drive tests by MyBroadband across South Africa, which will test network quality in major metropolitan areas, secondary cities, and main roads.<\/li>\n<li>Collecting mobile network test results from <a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=eu.vspeed.mybroadband\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>MyBroadband Speed Test App<\/strong><\/a> users across the country.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The project kicked off in Gauteng in mid-May, and will include tests in all nine provinces and all major cities over the coming weeks.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Custom test benches<\/h3>\n<p>MyBroadband has partnered with antenna and wireless communications specialist <a href=\"https:\/\/poynting.tech\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Poynting<\/strong><\/a> to improve its test bench and test vehicle design, to ensure accurate network testing results.<\/p>\n<p>Poynting is a global leader in the design and manufacturing of cellular antennas, which made it a perfect partner for this project.<\/p>\n<p>With the help of Professor Andre Fourie and Dr. Derek Nitch, our new test benches were designed to ensure accurate results.<\/p>\n<p>The photo below shows one of the new test benches with five Huawei Mate 20 Pro devices \u2013 the world\u2019s first phone to support Cat. 21 LTE connections.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Test-Bench.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-296626 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Test-Bench-640x426.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Test-Bench-640x426.jpg 640w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Test-Bench-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Test-Bench-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Test-Bench.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Dedicated testing vehicle<\/h3>\n<p>MyBroadband also followed the guidance of Fourie and Nitch in its selection and design of its dedicated testing vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>The testing vehicle \u2013 a bakkie with a fibreglass canopy &#8211;
