{"id":30936,"date":"2011-08-04T14:00:35","date_gmt":"2011-08-04T12:00:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=30936"},"modified":"2011-08-04T15:25:47","modified_gmt":"2011-08-04T13:25:47","slug":"new-dstv-pvr-planned","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadcasting\/30936-new-dstv-pvr-planned.html","title":{"rendered":"New DStv PVR planned"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a title=\"MiltiChoice\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/216214-MultiChoice\">MultiChoice<\/a> is planning to bring to market personal video recorders <a title=\"DStv PVR's with larger hard drives\" href=\"http:\/\/teeveetee.blogspot.com\/2011\/08\/multichoice-is-planning-bigger-pvrs.html\" target=\"_blank\">(PVRs) with larger hard drives<\/a>, television journalist Thinus Ferreira wrote on his blog recently.<\/p>\n<p>According to Ferreira this is to allow more movies to be stored on the device for the purpose of rental from the recently launched <a title=\"DStv BoxOffice: All the details\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadcasting\/29800-dstv-boxoffice-all-the-details.html\">DStv BoxOffice service<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>DStv BoxOffice is a type of video-on-demand (VOD) service that allows DStv Premium subscribers with PVRs to rent movies through their DStv decoder.<\/p>\n<p>At launch, movies were rented for 48 hours at a cost of R25 per rental.<\/p>\n<p>DStv Online CEO, <a title=\"John Kotsaftis\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/288587-John-Kotsaftis\">John Kotsaftis<\/a>, explained that the selection on <a title=\"DStv BoxOffice: All the details\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadcasting\/29800-dstv-boxoffice-all-the-details.html\">DStv BoxOffice was limited to 15 movies<\/a> at the time due to hard drive constraints.<\/p>\n<p>Kotsaftis also said that they plan to launch an <a title=\"DStv BoxOffice coming to the Internet in 2011\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadcasting\/29844-dstv-boxoffice-coming-to-the-internet-in-2011.html\">online version of BoxOffice<\/a> which will be open to all South Africans, not just DStv susbscribers. Kotsaftis said they plan to support Windows PC and Mac.<\/p>\n<p>Asked about how many movies users can expect to be available when the online version launches, Kotsaftis said that they have 40-50 movies \u201cin license\u201d and won\u2019t be limited in how many they could make available by hard drive space since the rentals will be delivered to your PC.<\/p>\n<p>MultiChoice was asked whether this number was still accurate, but were unable to confirm an exact number, saying only that it will have more movies than the set-top box service.<\/p>\n<p>Ferreira wrote that \u201cMultiChoice is envisioning bringing PVRs to market with larger hard drives so that more VOD content for DStv BoxOffice can be downloaded to decoders\u201d. This content will be transmitted overnight in spare capacity, or all day long at low bandwidth, Ferreira added.<\/p>\n<p>When asked whether they could confirm this, MultiChoice said it \u201cis always looking for opportunities to add more value to its services.
