{"id":311543,"date":"2019-06-27T09:49:35","date_gmt":"2019-06-27T07:49:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=311543"},"modified":"2019-06-27T09:49:59","modified_gmt":"2019-06-27T07:49:59","slug":"tesla-is-developing-its-own-battery-cells","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/motoring\/311543-tesla-is-developing-its-own-battery-cells.html","title":{"rendered":"Tesla is developing its own battery cells"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tesla employees told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2019\/06\/26\/tesla-secret-lab-building-battery-cells-to-reduce-panasonic-dependency.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>CNBC<\/strong><\/a> that the company is developing its own lithium-ion battery cells as well as the necessary processes to build these cells in large quantities.<\/p>\n<p>The electric vehicle company has been using battery cells from Panasonic for many years, but it appears that Tesla is now looking to reduce its reliance on other companies.<\/p>\n<p>Developing its own battery cells would come with numerous benefits, including the ability to optimise the cells for their own cars while removing the extra cost of sourcing cells through a third party.<\/p>\n<p>Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Panasonic have had some rough patches in their relationship recently.<\/p>\n<p>At one point, Panasonic paused all investment in Tesla&#8217;s expansion of its gigafactories, while Musk has also labeled Panasonic as one of the &#8220;constraints&#8221; affecting Tesla&#8217;s production of Model 3 vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>This reported information does not mean that Tesla plans on terminating its relationship with Panasonic any time soon.
