The PC has been around longer than any of the mobile technologies that currently aim to replace it, and it will live a while longer still. Mobile devices are most certainly the future, but the PC still holds key features that it excels in.<\/p>\n
Computers in general need to be able to multi-task; we demand that they are able to run many different applications at the same time without lagging. Portable devices just can\u2019t keep up. In a world where we have resource intensive programs such as Photoshop and memory intensive web browsers running multiple tabs, power is king, and the PC has more – a lot more.<\/p>\n
The PC is also cheaper, because it doesn\u2019t have to sacrifice space the way a mobile device has to. A PC can pack more RAM, bigger hard drives, a powerful CPU and chipset, a dedicated graphics card, and use a much larger screen. The PC is also no limited by a battery in the same way a mobile device is. In that way, one can have power hungry CPUs that runs hot; make use of cooling systems that would strain a laptop battery beyond what is feasible; and run a dedicated GPU, or for that matter more than one GPU, to give the pinnacle in performance, all for less than the price of an \u201cUltrabook\u201d.<\/p>\n
Cloud computing is a great idea, and has cemented itself in the future of technology. However, one must remember that rather than the PC being limited by the cloud, the PC can function as the cloud, or rather a central hub in that cloud. The PC can store local media files, many more than any mobile device. Synchronising files is quite a bit faster when a mobile device is connected to a PC, rather than a wireless service, and cheaper too. The PC is also used to update mobile devices, and back up vital information such as contact numbers or documents.<\/p>\n
Most things are done better on a PC, a true multi-tasking device. PCs can deal with all media and file types. They can handle games far better than any mobile replacement. They can be designed and upgraded with far more freedom than a mobile device. Upgrading the hardware in a Smartphone is almost unthinkable – the same thing with a tablet PC. As for laptops and Ultrabooks, these are limited to a few select components such as the hard drive or RAM.<\/p>\n
The PC does too much for portable devices to replace it as yet. It falls in the middle ground, offering lower prices and greater performance at the cost of portability. They also offer longevity when upgrade time comes along, and can perform a variety of tasks that are beyond the capability of mobile devices.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
