{"id":315169,"date":"2019-08-01T12:18:21","date_gmt":"2019-08-01T10:18:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=315169"},"modified":"2019-08-01T13:25:19","modified_gmt":"2019-08-01T11:25:19","slug":"rip-kwese-play","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadcasting\/315169-rip-kwese-play.html","title":{"rendered":"RIP Kwese Play"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Kwes\u00e9 Play has announced that it will be entering liquidation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is with deep regret that we are today announcing the liquidation of Kwes\u00e9 Play,&#8221; said Econet in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A few weeks ago, Roku, our technology platform partners, deactivated all the Kwes\u00e9 Play devices in our markets and customers have been unable to use them to watch Netflix, YouTube and other apps on their TVs.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We\u2019ve spent considerable time negotiating with Roku in order to reactivate the devices, but have unfortunately been unsuccessful. This means that the Kwes\u00e9 Play devices will remain deactivated and will no longer work.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Initial shut down<\/h3>\n<p>Kwes\u00e9 Play <a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadcasting\/228557-official-netflix-partner-kwese-play-launches-roku-player-in-south-africa.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>launched<\/strong><\/a> in South Africa in September 2017 after Econet Media penned agreements with both Roku and Netflix to be their official African partners.<\/p>\n<p>As part of this agreement, Roku built a customised media player for Kwes\u00e9 Play.<\/p>\n<p>On 3 July 2019, however, Roku devices that offered Kwes\u00e9 Play to South African subscribers stopped working, and displayed the following message:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEconet no longer offers Kwes\u00e9 Play. For more information contact Econet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Later that evening, Econet sent its subscribers an email which said that Roku had unexpectedly terminated the Kwes\u00e9 Play service amid negotiations between the two parties.<\/p>\n<p>The email said the following:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Econet Media, has noted that today customers received a notification on their devices that they have been deactivated.<\/p>\n<p>Kwes\u00e9 Play service was launched in partnership with Roku, a US-based OTT streaming platform. We have been in discussions with Roku regarding the viability of the Kwes\u00e9 Play service.<\/p>\n<p>The closure of the service and the message relayed on the device this morning was unexpected and comes at a time when we are engaged in discussions with Roku about their future plans on Africa.<\/p>\n<p>We apologise for the inconvenience and are working on resolving this. Detailed communication will be provided to all customers in due course.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Roku released its own statement at the time that claimed Econet was shutting down the Kwes\u00e9 Play service completely:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Econet licensed our platform to deliver the Kwes\u00e9 Play streaming service to its customers. Econet is shutting down the Kwes\u00e9 Play service and is no longer working with Roku.
