{"id":321868,"date":"2019-10-02T10:59:41","date_gmt":"2019-10-02T08:59:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=321868"},"modified":"2019-10-02T11:02:05","modified_gmt":"2019-10-02T09:02:05","slug":"dstv-cutting-channels-here-is-the-truth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadcasting\/321868-dstv-cutting-channels-here-is-the-truth.html","title":{"rendered":"DStv cutting channels &#8211; Here is the truth"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadcasting\/321790-dstv-to-cut-channels.html\"><strong>DStv recently announced<\/strong><\/a> that it would cut three popular channels from its network at the end of October \u2013 History, Crime + Investigation, and Lifetime.<\/p>\n<p>These three channels have been available to DStv Premium and DStv Compact Plus subscribers for years.<\/p>\n<p>The contract term for these channels, which are all provided by the American broadcasting company A&amp;E Networks, ends on 1 November 2019.<\/p>\n<p>MultiChoice\u2019s senior manager for corporate communications, Benedict Maaga told MyBroadband the decision formed part of a plan to refresh the DStv line-up.<\/p>\n<p>He said the fact that the contract term for these three channels came to an end gave MultiChoice an opportunity to evaluate the value it offers subscribers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dstv.co.za\/whats-on\/news\/articles\/channel-changes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>MultiChoice said in a statement<\/strong><\/a> that it is continuously reviewing its content lineup and channel selection to improve its entertainment offering.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis process includes ongoing engagement with various content partners to ensure we can provide more compelling content offerings for customers.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Negotiations broke down \u2013 report<\/h3>\n<p>Independent TV expert Thinus Ferreira <a href=\"http:\/\/teeveetee.blogspot.com\/2019\/10\/multichoice-dumps-history-lifetime-and.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>reported that the real reason<\/strong><\/a> for the decision is that negotiations between A&amp;E Networks and MultiChoice broke down.<\/p>\n<p>According to Ferreira, channel carriage contract renewal negotiations between the two parties \u201cturned ugly and broke down\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>A&amp;E Networks said in a statement that South African fans of its channels \u201ccould soon miss out on the thousands of hours of new and unique shows\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This includes current and upcoming local programming such as Crime Stories SA, Don\u2019t Tell the Bride SA and Loved Like Crazy,\u201d A&amp;E Networks said.<\/p>\n<p>The company added that it has been very proactive in trying to reach an agreement that is best for its viewers and for DStv.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur goal is to continue to bring our high-quality, award-winning programming to our local audiences,\u201d A&amp;E Networks said.<\/p>\n<p>It added that it is willing to keep negotiations open. \u201cWe sincerely hope DStv will find a way to work with us to keep our channels on its platform,\u201d the company said.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">New channels<\/h3>\n<p>As part of its announcement about cutting the History, Crime + Investigation, and Lifetime channels, MultiChoice said it will soon announce two new channels.<\/p>\n<p>These two channels, the pay-TV operator said, include \u201can established global brand and a new innovative brand\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBoth channels will bring exciting new titles and genres that viewers will really enjoy, including blue-chip documentaries, history, and factual reality shows,\u201d MultiChoice said.<\/p>\n<p>The company added that it continues to increase its investment in local shows and content, which it said \u201chave great resonance with customers and are a key driver of engagement\u201d.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Now read: <a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadcasting\/321790-dstv-to-cut-channels.html\">DStv to cut channels<\/a><\/h3>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>DStv is planning to cut popular channels from its DStv Premium and DStv Compact Plus bouquets.
