{"id":3257,"date":"2008-03-25T06:46:00","date_gmt":"2008-03-25T04:46:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2008-03-25T06:46:00","modified_gmt":"2008-03-25T04:46:00","slug":"south-africa-hits-1-million-broadband-users","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadband\/3257-south-africa-hits-1-million-broadband-users.html","title":{"rendered":"South Africa hits 1 Million broadband users"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>South Africa now has more than 1 Million broadband connections, made up mainly of ADSL and HSDPA subscribers. <\/p>\n<p>Telkom currently has in the region of 415 000 ADSL subscribers, and previously indicated that it is on track to hit their 420 000 target by the end of March.<\/p>\n<p>Vodacom has 360 000 3G\/HSDPA data card users while MTN recently announced that they now have 120 000 3G\/HSDPA data card users on their South African network. This brings the total number of ADSL and HSDPA subscribers to 895 000.<\/p>\n<p>iBurst currently has 60 000 subscribers while it is estimated that around 45 000 broadband users are served by Wireless Internet Service Providers around the country. <\/p>\n<p>Add the few thousand MyWireless users and it brings the total number of broadband subscribers to just over 1 Million. <\/p>\n<p>While this is a milestone well worth celebrating in the local broadband environment, the country&rsquo;s broadband penetration rate of 2% is still very far below international standards.<\/p>\n<p>The average broadband penetration rate in OECD countries is 18.8% with Denmark, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Korea, Norway and Iceland leading the way with over 29 subscribers per 100 inhabitants each.<\/p>\n<p>Experts estimate that the number of broadband connections will grow to between 1.5 Million and 2 Million by 2010.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php?t=111165\">Comments<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>South Africa has surpassed the 1 Million broadband subscriber mark.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_sma_x_autopost_status":"idle","_sma_x_autopost_error":"","_sma_x_post_id":"","_sma_facebook_post_id":"","_sma_instagram_post_id":"","_sma_threads_post_id":"","_sma_x_attempts":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[4],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-3257","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-broadband"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/3257"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=3257"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/3257\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=3257"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=3257"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=3257"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
