{"id":32808,"date":"2011-08-30T14:02:09","date_gmt":"2011-08-30T12:02:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=32808"},"modified":"2011-08-30T14:04:05","modified_gmt":"2011-08-30T12:04:05","slug":"online-discount-e-mail-battle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/internet\/32808-online-discount-e-mail-battle.html","title":{"rendered":"Online discount e-mail battle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Online shopping portal <a title=\"WantItAll\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/361772-WantItAll\">WantItAll<\/a> has regular special offers and discount promotions which they send to their users via promotional e-mails.<\/p>\n<p>One consumer was not happy with WantItAll\u2019s claims, arguing that the advertisement is misleading as the discount is capped at a certain amount.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Geldenhuys lodged a consumer complaint about WantItAll\u2019s e-mail advertisement with the <a title=\"ASA\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/306365-ASA-Advertising-Standards-Authority\">Advertising Standards Authority of South Africa (ASA)<\/a>, highlighting that the &#8216;10% Off&#8217; claim is capped at a certain amount and hence \u201cinvalidates the claim \u201810% OFF\u2019\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>WantItAll responded by saying that the terms and conditions of the offer are clearly stated in the footer of the e-mail. \u201cThe heading is not misleading as users do get the prescribed discount,\u201d said WantItAll.<\/p>\n<p>At the bottom of the promotional e-mail, in a smaller font, it states \u201cCoupon valid from \u2026 Maximum coupon discount R200 \u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_32810\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/internet\/32808-online-discount-e-mail-battle.html\/attachment\/wantitall-discount\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-32810\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-32810\" class=\"size-full wp-image-32810\" title=\"WantItAll Discount\" src=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/WantItAll-Discount.jpg\" alt=\"WantItAll Discount\" width=\"600\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/WantItAll-Discount.jpg 600w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/WantItAll-Discount-100x55.jpg 100w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/WantItAll-Discount-185x102.jpg 185w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-32810\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">WantItAll Discount Email<\/p><\/div>\n<p>WantItAll added that their e-mail advertisement is similar to a variety of other online retailers who use the same standards, but also committed to prescribe to guidelines which will reduce confusion, if such guidelines exist.<\/p>\n<p>The ASA ruled that a reasonable person would expect to receive a 10% discount on any purchase when looking at the e-mail, and that it is therefore misleading.<\/p>\n<p>The ASA ordered WantItAll to withdraw the advertisement with immediate effect and not use it in the same format in future.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_32838\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/internet\/32808-online-discount-e-mail-battle.html\/attachment\/wantitall-2\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-32838\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-32838\" class=\"size-full wp-image-32838\" title=\"WantItAll email promotion\" src=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/wantitall.gif\" alt=\"WantItAll email promotion\" width=\"600\" height=\"206\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/wantitall.gif 600w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/wantitall-100x34.gif 100w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/wantitall-185x63.gif 185w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-32838\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">WantItAll e-mail promotion<\/p><\/div>\n<p>WantItAll founder Justin Drennan said that they have pro-actively changed their advertisements to include clear information about the discounts, as soon as the complaint was received.
