{"id":328087,"date":"2019-11-18T15:39:22","date_gmt":"2019-11-18T13:39:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=328087"},"modified":"2019-11-19T14:19:41","modified_gmt":"2019-11-19T12:19:41","slug":"the-most-fuel-efficient-car-in-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/motoring\/328087-the-most-fuel-efficient-car-in-south-africa.html","title":{"rendered":"The most fuel-efficient car in South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Renault has won the title of most fuel-efficient car brand in WesBank and FNB&#8217;s first Fuel Economy Tour.<\/p>\n<p>The purpose of the event was to provide consumers with accurate fuel consumption figures for 40 popular cars in South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>The five-day event concluded on 16 November and encompassed 32 vehicle classes.<\/p>\n<p>These included entries from Kia, Fiat, Hyundai, Toyota, Lexus, Mitsubishi, Suzuki, Honda, Ford, Renault, Nissan, and Mahindra.<\/p>\n<p>Participants then drove along a 2,500km route from Johannesburg to Cape Town to test the fuel efficiencies of the cars.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Rules and monitoring measures<\/h3>\n<p>To monitor each vehicle&#8217;s progress along the route, trackers were installed in the cars.<\/p>\n<p>The equipment included tracking sensors and dash cams, as well as interior cameras.<\/p>\n<p>Using this hardware, the average speeds of the vehicles were tracked and it was ensured that they did not deviate from the route.<\/p>\n<p>Participants were required to drive as closely as possible to the speed limits and finish specific sections within a given time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe objective of this event was to provide consumers with fuel consumption figures that are relevant to going on a road trip in South Africa using main roads,\u201d said Fuel Economy Tour chief organiser Charl Wilken.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Winning brands<\/h3>\n<p>To determine the winner, the average consumption of the three best-performing vehicles from each car brand was used.<\/p>\n<p>The Renault Captur, Duster Techroad, and Kwid Climber performed best, and Suzuki took second place with its Baleno, Ignis, and Swift.<\/p>\n<p>Third place went to Mahindra, with one KUV 100 and two XUV 300 vehicles taking part.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Renault<\/strong> &#8211; 5.07 l\/100km<\/li>\n<li><strong>Suzuki<\/strong> &#8211; 5.10 l\/100km<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mahindra<\/strong> &#8211; 5.62 l\/100km<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Nissan and Ford claimed the fourth and fifth place, respectively.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Most-efficient cars<\/h3>\n<p>When looking at individual models, the Renault Captur 1.5-litre diesel-turbo was the car with the lowest average consumption.<\/p>\n<p>It was followed by the Toyota Aygo and the Nissan Qashqai 1.5-litre diesel turbo.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Renault Captur<\/strong> &#8211; 4.73 l\/100km<\/li>\n<li><strong>Toyota Aygo<\/strong> &#8211; 4.83 l\/100km<\/li>\n<li><strong>Nissan Qashqai<\/strong> &#8211; 4.85 l\/100km<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Bakkie efficiency<\/h3>\n<p>The turbo diesel double cab class for engines with less than 2,500cc was headed up by the Ford Ranger 2.0l.<\/p>\n<p>The Mitsubishi Triton took the runner-up spot, while the Nissan Navara grabbed third place.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Ford Ranger 2.0L<\/strong> &#8211;
