{"id":331940,"date":"2019-12-09T08:09:09","date_gmt":"2019-12-09T06:09:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=331940"},"modified":"2019-12-09T08:11:46","modified_gmt":"2019-12-09T06:11:46","slug":"new-hack-could-keep-windows-7-alive-for-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/software\/331940-new-hack-could-keep-windows-7-alive-for-years.html","title":{"rendered":"New hack could keep Windows 7 alive for years"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A newly-developed tool could allow Windows 7 users to receive essential updates years after official support is ended, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/news.softpedia.com\/news\/hack-could-allow-windows-7-to-get-updates-for-three-more-years-528495.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Softpedia News<\/a><\/strong> reports.<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft&#8217;s operating system will reach the end of its support lifecycle on 14 January 2020, which effectively cuts Windows 7 users off from critical security updates and other patches.<\/p>\n<p>The company has <a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/industrynews\/320117-upgrade-to-windows-10-now-or-face-big-security-risks.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>recommended<\/strong><\/a> that users update to Windows 10 to ensure that they are not left open to hacking and <a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/software\/323246-windows-7-is-under-attack-report.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>other forms of cyber attack<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft has said, however, that it will be providing paid Windows 7 support for a number of years through its <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/help\/4497181\/lifecycle-faq-extended-security-updates\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Extended Security Updates (ESU) programme<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The company called this &#8220;a last-resort option&#8221; for customers who use systems that require legacy support for Windows 7.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Test update hack<\/h3>\n<p>To provide customers with ESU support, Microsoft has released a Windows 7 test update that checks if a device is eligible for the programme.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/forums.mydigitallife.net\/threads\/bypass-windows-7-extended-security-updates-eligibility.80606\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>MyDigitalLife<\/strong><\/a> users have created a tool which circumvents this process, letting any Windows 7 device receive these updates, which would normally only be available to paying users.<\/p>\n<p>The developers said that the hack enables the download of the verification update irrespective of a device&#8217;s operating system version.<\/p>\n<p>The report stated that Microsoft is expected to block the bypass, but added that there is a &#8220;good chance&#8221;
