{"id":332198,"date":"2020-01-05T13:00:06","date_gmt":"2020-01-05T11:00:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=332198"},"modified":"2020-01-05T13:01:27","modified_gmt":"2020-01-05T11:01:27","slug":"how-to-drive-during-load-shedding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/motoring\/332198-how-to-drive-during-load-shedding.html","title":{"rendered":"How to drive during load-shedding"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Arrive Alive recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arrivealive.co.za\/Load-Shedding-and-Road-Safety\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>released its advice<\/strong><\/a> to drivers for navigating South African roads during load-shedding.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There is not much that the average person can do about power failures affecting traffic lights and traffic flow &#8211; the correct driving attitude can, however, go a long way in preventing collisions,&#8221; said Arrive Alive.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is suggested, where possible, that drivers plan their routes and leave early to try and avoid the heavy traffic periods.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Arrive Alive warned drivers to be extra cautious when the power is out because people may be distracted or impatient.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Many people are impatient because they are late due to the above-mentioned conditions and may take unnecessary risks,&#8221; said Arrive Alive.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Many other motorists are also stuck or delayed and may be using their cellphones and possibly not concentrating fully on the road.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Arrive Alive&#8217;s driving advice for specific scenarios during load-shedding is below.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Traffic lights and intersections<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>If traffic lights are not working the crossing becomes a stop street or a four way stop.<\/li>\n<li>You must stop even if there is no traffic from the other roads.<\/li>\n<li>If the vehicle in front of you crosses the intersection you must let the vehicles from the other stops enter the crossing before you take off.<\/li>\n<li>Be polite and pass swiftly while remaining cautious of possible offenders.<\/li>\n<li>Be aware of the sequence of vehicles from other directions approaching the intersection.<\/li>\n<li>Do not tailgate the vehicle in front of you.<\/li>\n<li>Be alert to innocent mistakes &#8211; do not become a victim of road rage and refrain from rude gestures.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Poor street lighting<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Power outages could remove street lighting, making it difficult for motorists to spot road hazards.<\/li>\n<li>Slow down to increase the time to evade possible dangers.<\/li>\n<li>If there is no oncoming traffic it is advisable to drive with your lights on bright.<\/li>\n<li>One of the road safety slogans is \u201cBe Visible Be Seen!\u201d.
