{"id":339002,"date":"2020-02-17T12:14:51","date_gmt":"2020-02-17T10:14:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=339002"},"modified":"2020-02-17T12:16:29","modified_gmt":"2020-02-17T10:16:29","slug":"chrome-to-get-built-in-augmented-reality","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/software\/339002-chrome-to-get-built-in-augmented-reality.html","title":{"rendered":"Chrome to get built-in augmented reality"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Google will add support for native augmented reality (AR) and near field communications (NFC) in the next version of the Chrome browser.<\/p>\n<p>The features are currently available in the Chrome 81 beta for Android, Linux, Mac, and Windows, which was <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.chromium.org\/2020\/02\/chrome-81-near-field-communications.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>released<\/strong><\/a> last week.<\/p>\n<p>This means developers will be able to deploy elements on their sites which make use of AR or NFC.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of using an app or system with built-in support for the technologies, the features can be used directly within Chrome.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">AR in the browser<\/h3>\n<p>The company said its WebXR Device API, which was first enabled to allow for virtual reality applications in Chrome 79, provides a platform for an immersive experience to interact with the real world.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve also added support for the WebXR Hit Test API, an API for placing objects in a real-world view,&#8221; Google stated.<\/p>\n<p>The added AR functionality will let users view and add virtual objects or markers in their surrounding environment, as illustrated in the images from Google below.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Augmented-reality-in-Chrome.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-339044 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Augmented-reality-in-Chrome.jpg\" alt=\"Augmented reality in Chrome\" width=\"486\" height=\"430\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Augmented-reality-in-Chrome.jpg 486w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Augmented-reality-in-Chrome-452x400.jpg 452w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 486px) 100vw, 486px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">NFC use-cases<\/h3>\n<p>The other new feature &#8211; Web NFC &#8211; will let users scan tags that contain embedded information and view it on their device.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Web NFC allows a web app to read and write to NFC tags. This opens new use cases to the web, including providing information about museum exhibits, inventory management, providing information in a conference badge, and many others,&#8221; Google stated.<\/p>\n<p>Google will launch Chrome 81 on 17 March.
