{"id":33978,"date":"2011-09-15T09:58:18","date_gmt":"2011-09-15T07:58:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=33978"},"modified":"2011-09-15T11:12:37","modified_gmt":"2011-09-15T09:12:37","slug":"monitors-to-boost-battery-life-with-panel-self-refresh-tech","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/hardware\/33978-monitors-to-boost-battery-life-with-panel-self-refresh-tech.html","title":{"rendered":"Monitors to boost battery life with Panel Self Refresh tech"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Summary<\/span>: Monitor technology was demonstrated at Intel Developer Forum 2011 that promises 45 minutes to an hour longer battery life by removing <\/em><\/strong><strong><em>from the PC <\/em><\/strong><strong><em>the burden of refreshing a display panel 60 times per second.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Intel\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/307489-Intel\">Intel\u2019s<\/a> <a title=\"Mooly Eden\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/365720-Mooly-Eden\">Mooly Eden<\/a>, vice president and general manager of the PC client group, showcased Panel Self Refresh (PSR) technology during his keynote at the Intel Developer Forum (IDF) conference in San Francisco this year (2011).<\/p>\n<p>A monitor said to be using version 1.3 of the Embedded DisplayPort (eDP) standard was used for the PSR demonstration and was connected to a PC running Windows set to display a photo slideshow.<\/p>\n<p>The principle behind the technology is that the panel refreshes itself when displaying a static image instead of requiring that the system\u2019s graphics processing unit (GPU) do so.<\/p>\n<p>In the case of an average monitor, this could mean saving the GPU from refreshing the display 60 times per second with the same image over and over again.<\/p>\n<p>The PSR eDP panel has its own memory from which it shows a static image and when the demonstrator unplugged the monitor\u2019s display cable, the last displayed image remained on screen.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_33980\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-33980\" class=\"size-full wp-image-33980\" title=\"Panel Self Refresh demo -
