A foreign man, about 40 years of age, was arrested for impersonating an Icasa inspector and trying to defraud a cellphone dealer in Krugersdorp, Gauteng police said on Friday. <\/p>\n
Captain Jacob Raboroko said the man, thought to be of Nigerian origin, phoned a Krugersdorp cellphone dealer on Thursday afternoon and told him that he was an inspector for the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa). <\/p>\n
The man told the dealer that he wanted to meet him at his shop. <\/p>\n
The dealer went back to his shop and met the supposed Icasa inspector. <\/p>\n
The man told the dealer that if the dealer gave him R1 000 he could supply the dealer with cellphones. <\/p>\n
The dealer became suspicious of the man and asked for an Icasa identification card. <\/p>\n
The man was unable to produce such a card and attempted to flee. <\/p>\n
Members of the community caught the man in the street and assaulted him as the man had reportedly become aggressive. <\/p>\n
Police arrived at the scene and arrested the man. <\/p>\n
A case of fraud and theft was being investigated. <\/p>\n
The man would appear in the Krugersdorp Magistrate's Court on Monday, said Raboroko.<\/p>\n
