{"id":34224,"date":"2011-09-19T16:18:36","date_gmt":"2011-09-19T14:18:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=34224"},"modified":"2011-09-20T10:08:40","modified_gmt":"2011-09-20T08:08:40","slug":"batteries-many-core-processing-and-ultrabooks-idf-2011-roundup","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/hardware\/34224-batteries-many-core-processing-and-ultrabooks-idf-2011-roundup.html","title":{"rendered":"Batteries, many-core processing and Ultrabooks: IDF 2011 roundup"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Summary<\/span>: Intel Developer Forum 2011 had a number of recurring themes and key announcements, including: Ultrabook, better battery life, many-core computing, and a partnership with Google regarding Android.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The consumer technology business has been an interesting place these last few years.<\/p>\n<p>It seemed as though an equilibrium had been reached as the various players had settled neatly into their respective roles, and on the surface it looked as if all their efforts went towards maintaining the balance of power.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s difficult (and dangerous) to try predict what would have happened had personal computing continued to be restricted to desktops or laptops. However, one may argue that PC development has relentlessly pursued increased mobility.<\/p>\n<p>With notebooks, netbooks, PDAs, \u201cpalmtops,\u201d and the initial attempts at tablet PCs, was what is now called the \u201csmartphone revolution\u201d not inevitable?<\/p>\n<p>Alternate histories and nostalgia aside, the wheel has turned, and all of a sudden the processor war is not just between x86 chipzilla <a title=\"Intel\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/307489-Intel\">Intel<\/a> and underdog <a title=\"AMD\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/219302-AMD\">AMD<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As the popularity (and sales) of smartphones and tablet PCs continue to sky-rocket, companies such as <a title=\"Nvidia\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/361596-Nvidia\">Nvidia<\/a>, <a title=\"Samsung\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/333656-Samsung\">Samsung<\/a>, and <a title=\"Qualcomm\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/355674-Qualcomm\">Qualcomm<\/a> are the ones building the processors for these rapidly selling devices, and Intel is the company playing catch-up.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Intel Developer Forum 2011: Key announcements<\/h3>\n<p>Key announcements made by the chip giant during its 2011 Intel Developer Forum (IDF) conference held in San Francisco, suggest that the company has taken seriously the threat posed by ARM architecture in mobile computing devices and is acting on it.<\/p>\n<p>Ultrabook, battery life, and &#8220;many-core computing\u201d were the recurring themes at Intel Developer Forum (IDF) in San Francisco this year (2011), but Intel CEO <a title=\"Paul Otellini\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/331632-Paul-Otellini\">Paul Otellini<\/a> also announced a <a title=\"Intel to get in on Android smartphone action\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/hardware\/33830-intel-to-get-in-on-android-smartphone-action.html\">partnership with Google<\/a> to get Intel Medfield based <a title=\"Android Mobile Oerating System\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/221979-Google-Android\">Android<\/a> devices out during the first half of 2012.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Ultrabook\u2122<\/h3>\n<p>Outside of Intel\u2019s designs on becoming the <a title=\"Intel to get in on Android smartphone action\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/hardware\/33830-intel-to-get-in-on-android-smartphone-action.html\">architecture of choice for Android<\/a>, Intel\u2019s other big device push is the now trademarked Ultrabook.<\/p>\n<p>High-spec ultra-portable laptops are nothing new, but Intel have been punting their Ultrabook standard (and trademark) for these devices throughout 2011.<\/p>\n<p>Among other things, Intel\u2019s standard addresses how thin and light the devices need to be, how long the battery needs to last, and mainstream pricing of below $1,000 for the base model of an Ultrabook.<\/p>\n<p>With tablet PC sales seeming to eat into the conventional PC market share, it remains to be seen whether the Ultrabook will be as revolutionary as Intel makes it out to be.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Many-core computing<\/h3>\n<p>Multi-core processing has historically been a large focus area for Intel, and this year\u2019s IDF saw the chip maker not only promising 10+ CPU cores going forward, but also research programmes that will help ensure that applications scale well with \u201cmany core\u201d architecture.<\/p>\n<p>During his keynote at IDF, <a title=\"Justin Rattner\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/366014-Justin-Rattner\">Justin Rattner<\/a>, Intel CTO and director of Intel Labs, showcased a number of many-core technology demos. These included:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Processing and visualization of data from CERN\u2019s Large Hadron Collider.<\/li>\n<li>Increasing the number of transactions a database server using the Memcache open source project can execute per second: from 560,000 to over 800,000 with 48 cores, with the aim of getting to a million queries per second.<\/li>\n<li>Parallel JavaScript engine for web browsers, demonstrated with a Firefox extension<\/li>\n<li>Research project for implementing an LTE (Long Term Evolution \u2013 a wireless broadband technology) base station using a multi-core Intel-based PC.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Battery life<\/h3>\n<p>Probably the most significant announcements and demonstrations to come out of IDF is Intel\u2019s work to improve device battery life by decreasing the power consumption in their processors.<\/p>\n<p>At the opening keynote, Intel CEO Paul Otellini said that their new <a title=\"New Intel CPUs to improve battery life\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/hardware\/33868-new-intel-cpus-to-improve-battery-life.html\">Haswell architecture would offer significantly decreased power consumption<\/a>.
