{"id":34250,"date":"2011-09-19T21:46:08","date_gmt":"2011-09-19T19:46:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=34250"},"modified":"2011-09-20T10:21:58","modified_gmt":"2011-09-20T08:21:58","slug":"amazon-appstore-for-android-in-sa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/software\/34250-amazon-appstore-for-android-in-sa.html","title":{"rendered":"Amazon Appstore for Android in SA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong><span style=\"color: #993300;\">Summary:<\/span> Amazon\u2019s Appstore for Android devices is becoming available outside the United States, and has been confirmed to be working in South Africa.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The <a title=\"Amazon\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/356046-Amazon\">Amazon<\/a> Appstore for <a title=\"Android Mobile Oerating System\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/221979-Google-Android\">Android<\/a>, previously only available in the United States, has started making its apps available to international users according to user reports from around the world.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.androidpolice.com\/2011\/09\/19\/is-the-amazon-appstore-officially-rolling-out-globally\/\" target=\"_blank\">According to a post by Android Police<\/a> citing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-digital-reader.com\/2011\/09\/19\/amazon-appstore-expands-to-australia-elsewhere\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Digital Reader<\/a>, Amazon seems to have made the apps in its store available to the rest of the world on the sly.<\/p>\n<p>On top of that, Android Police reported that Amazon provided the following comment when asked about the apparent launch: \u201cThanks for reaching out. We have not announced any plans for international expansion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/mobile-apps\/b?ie=UTF8&amp;node=2350149011\" target=\"_blank\">Amazon Appstore for Android page<\/a> still says that the Appstore is available only to its customers in the US.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_34248\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?attachment_id=34248\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-34248\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34248\" class=\"size-full wp-image-34248\" title=\"Amazon Appstore for Android\" src=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Amazon-Appstore-for-Android.jpg\" alt=\"Amazon Appstore for Android\" width=\"600\" height=\"162\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Amazon-Appstore-for-Android.jpg 600w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Amazon-Appstore-for-Android-100x27.jpg 100w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Amazon-Appstore-for-Android-185x49.jpg 185w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-34248\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Amazon Appstore for Android<\/p><\/div>\n<p>However, we were able to <a title=\"Amazon Appstore for Android download\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/app-email\">download the application for the Amazon Appstore<\/a> and download and run both the free app for the day, as well as purchase a paid-for app from South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>We could also verify that devices running the Froyo (2.2), Gingerbread (2.3), and Honeycomb (3.2) versions of Android were able to download and install apps from the Amazon Appstore in SA.<\/p>\n<p>Though Amazon may be playing coy on this, it seems as though non-US customers may finally have cracked the nod.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Update<\/strong>: It seems as though Amazon turned its region locking back on some time during the night.
