Users will still be able to watch in high definition if they want, but will have to choose to do so.<\/p>\n<p>YouTube, part of Alphabet Inc.\u2019s Google, is extending a policy it already instituted in Europe, where regulators have asked major streaming services, including Netflix Inc. and Amazon Prime Video, to\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-03-20\/amazon-netflix-cut-europe-s-stream-quality-to-ease-networks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reduce their bandwidth usage<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Use of streaming services has\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-03-18\/netflix-twitch-traffic-booms-because-everyone-needs-an-escape\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">surged<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>in recent weeks as hundreds of millions of people stay home to contain the spread of the virus. While YouTube viewing has historically spiked in the evening when people are off work, consumption is now more steady across the day, the company said.<\/p>\n<p>Streaming video requires more internet bandwidth than music, messaging or maps because of the size of the files transmitted.<\/p>\n<p>Google was the largest consumer of traffic volume on the internet last year, just ahead of Netflix, according to\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandvine.com\/blog\/netflix-vs.-google-vs.-amazon-vs.-facebook-vs.-microsoft-vs.-apple-traffic-share-of-internet-brands-global-internet-phenomena-spotlight\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a study<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0by Sandvine, a network analysis firm. Recently, YouTube traffic has surged even more, Sandvine\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandvine.com\/blog\/covid-19-update-growth-of-video-during-work-at-home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reported last week<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>YouTube already limits the quality of video based on the strength of a user\u2019s internet connection.
