{"id":345347,"date":"2020-03-29T13:00:31","date_gmt":"2020-03-29T11:00:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=345347"},"modified":"2020-03-29T13:01:54","modified_gmt":"2020-03-29T11:01:54","slug":"metrofibre-free-speed-upgrades-explained","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/fibre\/345347-metrofibre-free-speed-upgrades-explained.html","title":{"rendered":"MetroFibre free speed upgrades explained"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MetroFibre has provided all direct customers, its ISPs, and resellers with a top-up of 10Mbps per customer on top of their existing capacity.<\/p>\n<p>This follows several fibre network operators and Internet service providers announcing they would provide <a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/fibre\/344613-free-internet-speed-upgrades-during-lockdown-in-south-africa-all-the-details.html\"><strong>free line speed upgrades<\/strong><\/a> to fibre-to-the-home subscribers.<\/p>\n<p>Vumatel and Link Africa confirmed their line speed upgrades before President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that South Africa would be <a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/motoring\/345043-n1-freeway-in-photos-day-1-of-national-lockdown.html\"><strong>locked down for 21 days<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>They initially stated that their upgrades were aimed at helping people work from home and to stream educational services.<\/p>\n<p>Frogfoot and MetroFibre have stated they will also increase the line speeds of their customers for free for several months.<\/p>\n<p>In all cases, the four fibre network operators stated they will double or more-than-double subscriber speeds for the next few months.<\/p>\n<p>However, several FTTH subscribers who are infrastructure operated by MetroFibre said their Internet service providers are not offering upgrades.<\/p>\n<p>Internet service providers have <a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/forum\/threads\/free-internet-speed-upgrades-for-lockdown-in-south-africa-%E2%80%93-all-the-details.1076209\/post-25160025\"><strong>informed clients<\/strong><\/a> that only MetroFibre&#8217;s own ISPs will be giving clients upgrades.<\/p>\n<p>Others reported that they <a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/forum\/threads\/free-internet-speed-upgrades-for-lockdown-in-south-africa-%E2%80%93-all-the-details.1076209\/post-25162081\"><strong>only received a 10Mbps speed upgrade<\/strong><\/a> and not a doubling as was originally promised.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">MetroFibre explains<\/h3>\n<p>MetroFibre told MyBroadband it has provided all MetroFibre direct customers, its ISPs, and resellers with a top-up of 10Mbps per customer on top of their existing capacity.<\/p>\n<p>This is a complimentary upgrade for all customers and will be for a two-month period until 27 May 2020.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Metrofibre adopted a phased approach over two days from 25-27 March to do these upgrades to ensure that our capacity was managed during this time and that no customers were inconvenienced,&#8221;
