{"id":348251,"date":"2020-04-17T11:28:49","date_gmt":"2020-04-17T09:28:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=348251"},"modified":"2020-04-17T13:19:32","modified_gmt":"2020-04-17T11:19:32","slug":"rain-users-hit-by-downtime","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cellular\/348251-rain-users-hit-by-downtime.html","title":{"rendered":"Rain users hit by downtime"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Rain customers across South Africa are reporting problems with their Internet connections.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/downdetector.co.za\/status\/rain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Downdetector<\/strong><\/a> shows a large spike in downtime reports for the Rain network, all of which relate to Internet connectivity problems.<\/p>\n<p>It is unclear if both 5G fixed-wireless customers and 4G mobile users are affected, and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/zakiyya_c\/status\/1251064187738107905\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>complaints on social media<\/strong><\/a> and the Downdetector website originate from both customer bases.<\/p>\n<p>Downdetector shows that reports of downtime saw a sharp increase as of 08:00 on Friday 17 April and have continued up to the time of writing.<\/p>\n<p>According to the outage map, users in Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Durban are the most affected by this outage.<\/p>\n<p>The image below shows the spike in Downdetector reports for Rain since 08:00 on Friday 17 April.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Rain-outage-reports.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-348253\" src=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Rain-outage-reports-640x257.jpeg\" alt=\"Rain outage reports\" width=\"640\" height=\"257\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Rain-outage-reports-640x257.jpeg 640w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Rain-outage-reports-600x241.jpeg 600w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Rain-outage-reports-768x308.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Rain-outage-reports.jpeg 1116w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">New temporary spectrum<\/h3>\n<p>Rain is one of South Africa&#8217;s mobile networks which <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wireless\/348191-here-are-the-companies-which-received-more-spectrum.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">today received<\/a><\/strong> additional temporary spectrum to help improve its network quality during the national coronavirus lockdown.<\/p>\n<p>This spectrum will be released for the duration of the national state of disaster and is expected to ease network congestion.<\/p>\n<p>It should also enable operators to maintain the quality of broadband services and lower the cost of access to consumers.<\/p>\n<p>Rain was allocated 30MHz of spectrum in the 2,600MHz band by the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA).<\/p>\n<p>Other recipients of temporary spectrum allocations included Vodacom, MTN, Telkom, and Liquid Telecom.<\/p>\n<p>It is unclear whether the allocation of this new spectrum is related to the downtime experienced this morning.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Update &#8211; Rain billing issues<\/h3>\n<p>Rain CEO Willem Roos told MyBroadband that while they were not aware of any outage, the spike in Internet outage reports on Downdetector may be due to a billing issue on the network.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The rain network is functioning well and we are not aware of any large outage,&#8221; Roos said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;During the lockdown period, Rain has afforded customers an additional two weeks to settle their accounts.
