{"id":355827,"date":"2020-06-11T13:05:38","date_gmt":"2020-06-11T11:05:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=355827"},"modified":"2020-06-11T13:06:28","modified_gmt":"2020-06-11T11:06:28","slug":"tiktok-faces-scrutiny-over-data-practices","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/security\/355827-tiktok-faces-scrutiny-over-data-practices.html","title":{"rendered":"TikTok faces scrutiny over data practices"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>TikTok, ByteDance Ltd.\u2019s social media app, is facing broader scrutiny over its privacy policies, following a decision by the European Union\u2019s data protection chiefs to coordinate potential investigations.<\/p>\n<p>Wednesday\u2019s announcement by a panel of EU authorities follows the decision last month by the data-protection commission in the Netherlands to\u00a0open an investigation\u00a0into the company\u2019s policies to protect children\u2019s data, saying the app is \u201cclearly loved\u201d by Dutch kids.<\/p>\n<p>The company, owned by Beijing-based ByteDance, has been grappling with mounting questions from U.S. policy makers over whether it jeopardizes national security. It rejects the notion it\u2019s controlled by the Chinese government or that user data is at risk.<\/p>\n<p>The 27-nation EU has some of the strictest data-protection laws in the world.
