{"id":356923,"date":"2020-06-22T10:02:02","date_gmt":"2020-06-22T08:02:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=356923"},"modified":"2020-06-22T15:22:39","modified_gmt":"2020-06-22T13:22:39","slug":"chrome-will-finally-solve-its-big-ram-problem","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/internet\/356923-chrome-will-finally-solve-its-big-ram-problem.html","title":{"rendered":"Chrome will finally solve its big RAM problem"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new feature in Microsoft&#8217;s May 2020 Windows update will allow Google to make substantial reductions to the amount of RAM that Chrome uses.<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft has added a feature called <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-au\/windows\/win32\/sbscs\/application-manifests#heaptype\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>SegmentHeap<\/strong><\/a> which reduces the memory usage of Win32 applications such as web browsers.<\/p>\n<p>The feature replaces the legacy heap technology and has been made available for developers to use in their applications.<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft&#8217;s Chromium-based Edge browser already <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.windows.com\/msedgedev\/2020\/06\/17\/improving-memory-usage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>uses<\/strong><\/a> this new feature and the company said it has seen a reduction in memory usage of up to 27%.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our goal on the Microsoft Edge team is to deliver the best performing browser possible on Windows and other platforms,&#8221; said Microsoft.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When a browser uses too much memory, it can slow down the whole system; memory, in general, is a critical resource to keeping any device running smoothly.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Chrome to use SegmentHeap<\/h3>\n<p>Google plans to follow in the Edge browser&#8217;s footsteps and use SegmentHeap to reduce its memory usage.<\/p>\n<p>A Google Chrome engineer <a href=\"https:\/\/chromium-review.googlesource.com\/c\/chromium\/src\/+\/2163163\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>said<\/strong><\/a> they expect the new feature to result in significant benefits for users.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExperiments with per-machine opting-in to the segment heap for chrome.exe suggests that this could save hundreds of MB in the browser and Network Service utility processes, among others, on some machines,&#8221; said Google.<\/p>\n<p>Google added that while real-world results will vary, everyone should experience significant benefits from this change &#8211; the biggest of which will be found on multi-core computers.<\/p>\n<p>The feature is not yet available for Google Chrome, however.<\/p>\n<p>The Google engineer said that the company still needs to solve build issues before the release version of Chrome can use this new feature.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe could enable it now but that would cause build warnings.
