{"id":359289,"date":"2020-07-09T09:15:16","date_gmt":"2020-07-09T07:15:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=359289"},"modified":"2020-07-09T12:46:13","modified_gmt":"2020-07-09T10:46:13","slug":"intel-reveals-thunderbolt-4-speeds-and-specifications","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/hardware\/359289-intel-reveals-thunderbolt-4-speeds-and-specifications.html","title":{"rendered":"Intel reveals Thunderbolt 4 speeds and specifications"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Intel has <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.intel.com\/news\/introducing-thunderbolt-4-universal-cable-connectivity-everyone\/#gs.ac44u5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">detailed<\/a><\/strong> the performance capabilities and specifications of its Thunderbolt 4 connectivity solution.<\/p>\n<p>The updated USB-C-based connection features the same overall 40Gb\/s transfer speed of Thunderbolt 3.<\/p>\n<p>However, Intel has upped the minimum specifications for devices that will integrate the company&#8217;s Thunderbolt 4 host controllers.<\/p>\n<p>Among these specifications, it has double the minimum video and data requirements of Thunderbolt 3.<\/p>\n<p>This means computers with a Thunderbolt 4-compliant port will require connectivity support for two 4K displays or a single 8K display.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, devices will need to have increased data storage capability, with PCI Express at 32Gbps for storage speeds of up to 3,000MB\/s.<\/p>\n<p>Other minimum requirements include the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Support for docks with up to four Thunderbolt 4 ports.<\/li>\n<li>PC charging on at least one computer port for thin-and-light laptops that require less than 100W to charge.<\/li>\n<li>Wake your computer from sleep by touching the keyboard or mouse when connected to a Thunderbolt dock.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Required Intel VT-d-based direct memory access (DMA) protection that helps prevent physical DMA attacks.<\/p>\n<p>This will address the critical vulnerability dubbed &#8220;Thunderspy&#8221;, which could potentially allow hackers to steal data from locked devices or encrypted storage through physical access to the Thunderbolt port.<\/p>\n<p>The table below compares the minimum specification requirements for Thunderbolt 4, Thunderbolt 3, USB4 and USB3.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Thunderbolt-4-minimum-specifications.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-359293\" src=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Thunderbolt-4-minimum-specifications.jpg\" alt=\"Thunderbolt 4 minimum specifications\" width=\"640\" height=\"377\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Thunderbolt-4-minimum-specifications.jpg 640w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Thunderbolt-4-minimum-specifications-600x353.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Thunderbolt 4 availability<\/h3>\n<p>The company said Thunderbolt 4 complies with the broadest set of industry-standard specifications \u2013 including USB 4, DisplayPort and PCI Express (PCIe) \u2013 and is fully compatible with prior generations of Thunderbolt and USB products.<\/p>\n<p>Intel expects to deliver its first 8000-series host controllers for Thunderbolt 4 later this year.<\/p>\n<p>This includes the JHL8540 and JHL8340 host controllers for computer manufacturers, and the JHL8440 device controller for accessory makers.<\/p>\n<p>Its upcoming mobile PC processors &#8211;
