{"id":36012,"date":"2011-10-13T15:30:47","date_gmt":"2011-10-13T13:30:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=36012"},"modified":"2011-10-14T10:10:37","modified_gmt":"2011-10-14T08:10:37","slug":"blackberry-downtime-rim-executives-explain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cellular\/36012-blackberry-downtime-rim-executives-explain.html","title":{"rendered":"BlackBerry downtime: RIM executives explain"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Millions of <a title=\"BlackBerry\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/342709-BlackBerry\">BlackBerry<\/a> users around the globe were affected by Internet service problems from 10 October to 13 October 2011.<\/p>\n<p>The problem was resolved this morning (13 October), and BlackBerry parent <a title=\"Research In Motion (RIM)\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/313525-Research-in-Motion-%28RIM%29\">Research In Motion (RIM)<\/a> said that they continue to monitor the situation to ensure ongoing stability.<\/p>\n<p>RIM explained that a review of their operations and infrastructure will now take place to understand the cause.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A lack of feedback<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One of the biggest criticisms from BlackBerry users about the problems was the lack of information from RIM regarding the downtime.<\/p>\n<p>In South Africa, <a title=\"Vodacom\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/227063-Vodacom\">Vodacom<\/a> even apologized for the downtime on behalf of RIM, and pro-actively informed their subscribers as to the problems on RIM\u2019s network.<\/p>\n<p>RIM has however now jumped into action with a damage control campaign.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Damage control<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This morning <a title=\"Robin Bienfait\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/372946-Robin-Bienfait\">Robin Bienfait<\/a>, Chief Information Officer at RIM, apologized for the service interruptions and delays and gave an update on the service issues they are trying to solve.<\/p>\n<p>RIM founder and co-CEO <a title=\"Mike Lazaridis\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/359852-Mike-Lazaridis\">Mike Lazaridis<\/a> used YouTube to apologize for the service outages this week. \u201cWe have let many of you down,\u201d said Lazaridis.<\/p>\n<p>Lazaridis added that they are working hard to stabilize the systems, but explained that an ETA on the full recovery of all systems is not possible at this time.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/zQ1esvGae_s?rel=0\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Patrick Spence\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/372950-Patrick-Spence\">Patrick Spence<\/a>, Managing Director Global Sales and Regional Marketing at RIM, said in a telephonic interview that he understands the frustration expressed by customers.<\/p>\n<p>Spence explained that even after replacing the faulty switch which caused the problems, it took a lot of time to process the backlog of traffic.
