{"id":36340,"date":"2011-10-21T21:37:17","date_gmt":"2011-10-21T19:37:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=36340"},"modified":"2011-10-21T21:39:23","modified_gmt":"2011-10-21T19:39:23","slug":"blackberry-split-needed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/business\/36340-blackberry-split-needed.html","title":{"rendered":"BlackBerry split needed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a title=\"BlackBerry\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/342709-BlackBerry\">BlackBerry\u2019s<\/a> global outage has made the takeover or shake-up of its parent <a title=\"Research In Motion (RIM)\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/313525-Research-in-Motion-%28RIM%29\">Research In Motion (RIM)<\/a> more likely say analysts, despite its peace offering aimed at appeasing frustrated customers.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday Canadian based RIM offered BlackBerry customers free premium apps worth a $100 (about R800) as a form of compensation for its service interruptions and outage last week.<\/p>\n<p>The initiative has been done as a measure to \u201creward consumers for their loyalty\u2026 during the outage last week,\u201d said Patrick Spence, managing director, global sales and regional marketing for RIM.<\/p>\n<p>RIM\u2019s \u201ctoken of appreciation\u201d to customers includes free technical support until the end of December this year. The apps will be available on BlackBerry smartphones and not on the company\u2019s tablet device \u2013 The Playbook.<\/p>\n<p>The outage spanned across three continents last week, with just over 1.5m users in South Africa being affected.<\/p>\n<p>Senior research analyst for ICT practice at <a title=\"Frost &amp; Sullivan\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/355298-Frost-amp-Sullivan\">Frost &amp; Sullivan<\/a>, <a title=\"Vitalis Ozianyi\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/335824-Vitalis-Ozianyi\">Vitalis Ozianyi<\/a> says after this outage it makes sense for <a title=\"Vodafone\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/313865-Vodafone-UK\">Vodafone<\/a> to acquire RIM \u201cto make use of its internet service as a way to boost its data services whilst being in control of the kind of services and content that it delivers\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He adds that Samsung purchasing RIM\u2019s hardware device manufacturing component also makes sense as it might eliminate a major player in the device segment.<\/p>\n<p>With regards to Canadian merchant bank Jaguar Financial Corp\u2019s call for RIM to be split into separate public companies &#8211; a network company, a device company and a patents company -Okeleke says that this may not be a winning formula for the company.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t see either of these components surviving on their own.\u00a0 BlackBerry is not known for making the most aesthetically appealing phones, but its business solution is what added value to it for a lot of its customers. Separating the two would be a drastic move for the company as the combination of the two is what has helped it gain market share,\u201d said Okeleke.<\/p>\n<p>Analysts also believe that RIM will have to rethink its business.
