{"id":364,"date":"2007-06-21T17:50:00","date_gmt":"2007-06-21T15:50:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2007-06-21T17:50:00","modified_gmt":"2007-06-21T15:50:00","slug":"ms-makes-conciliatory-noises","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/software\/364-ms-makes-conciliatory-noises.html","title":{"rendered":"MS makes conciliatory noises"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font size=\"2\">In the software world there are two camps: the free and open source (Foss) movement, where the guts of the software are available for anyone to look at and modify; and the proprietary software movement, where access to a program is strictly controlled and only the company that created the software can make changes. <\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"2\">The Foss movement is championed by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.linux.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Linux <\/a>operating system while <a href=\"http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\" target=\"_blank\">Microsoft<\/a> is typically cast as the champion of the proprietary software movement. <\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"2\">Government has been making moves to get more of its departments to use Foss software. <\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"2\">However, Microsoft&#39;s Ashley de Klerk says that cutting the proprietary software vendors out of the loop completely wouldn&#39;t only hurt SA companies selling services and support for those products but would also reduce the level of competitiveness in tendering processes. <\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"2\">Microsoft&#39;s relationship with the Foss community could best be described as antagonistic &#8211; especially considering Microsoft&#39;s recent comments that the Linux operating system infringes on 295 of its patents. <\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"2\">With SA&#39;s Government making noisesabout going the Foss route, it seems Microsoft is anxious to protect its partners and its SA business by playing nicely with its competitors.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php?t=78993\">Comments<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MICROSOFT is a company that everyone loves to hate, often taking the blame for high IT costs and facing the ire of the free and open source software movement. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_sma_x_autopost_status":"idle","_sma_x_autopost_error":"","_sma_x_post_id":"","_sma_facebook_post_id":"","_sma_instagram_post_id":"","_sma_threads_post_id":"","_sma_x_attempts":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[16],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-364","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-software"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/364"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=364"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/364\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=364"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=364"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=364"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
