{"id":3659,"date":"2008-04-30T08:23:00","date_gmt":"2008-04-30T06:23:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2008-04-30T08:23:00","modified_gmt":"2008-04-30T06:23:00","slug":"grilling-expected-at-sabc-meeting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/telecoms\/3659-grilling-expected-at-sabc-meeting.html","title":{"rendered":"Grilling expected at SABC meeting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE main purpose of the parliamentary portfolio committee on communications meeting today will be oversight of the SABC&rsquo;s budget and strategy. <\/p>\n<p>Yet the public broadcaster&rsquo;s executive team may face tough questions over its board, and more allegations of biased reporting and poor management. <\/p>\n<p>Communications portfolio committee chairman Ismael Vadi said on Friday the meeting with the SABC, to be presented by CEO Dali Mpofu, was &ldquo;routine&rdquo; with the aim of discussing financial budgets and strategy. <\/p>\n<p>Vadi said the possibility of increased funding for the public broadcaster might be discussed. <\/p>\n<p>African National Congress (ANC) policy was to increase SABC funding over time, with a resolution at the ANC&rsquo;s December conference in Polokwane that state funding should rise to a minimum of 60% from only about 2% at present. <\/p>\n<p>There is simmering discontent in the ANC on the composition of the board the party itself installed post-Polokwane. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It&rsquo;s a briefing on the SABC budget, but it is unlikely the contentious issues (about) the SABC will not come up, perhaps during the question time,&rdquo; said Democratic Alliance media spokesman Dene Smuts. <\/p>\n<p>Inkatha Freedom Party media spokesman Suzanne Vos said selection of the SABC board &ldquo;is always a contentious issue&rdquo; and the only reason the extent of ANC influence on the board had become common knowledge recently was because it was a politically divided organisation. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Now, post-Polokwane, the very MPs who voted for the SABC board are calling for its resignation, or at least the removal of the persons now serving as members they didn&rsquo;t want in the first place,&rdquo; said Vos. <\/p>\n<p>According to media reports, certain board members were allegedly appointed because of support for President Thabo Mbeki despite the fact they were not qualified for the position. <\/p>\n<p>The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) has threatened to take the SABC to court, as its board is allegedly not constituted correctly. <\/p>\n<p>A threat of legal action would not be withdrawn without some indication from Parliament over board alteration, Cosatu spokesman Patrick Craven said. <\/p>\n<p>The SABC declined comment at the time of going to press.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php?t=116456\">SABC Discussion<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>THE purpose of the communications committee meeting will be oversight of the SABC\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s budget and strategy<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_sma_x_autopost_status":"idle","_sma_x_autopost_error":"","_sma_x_post_id":"","_sma_facebook_post_id":"","_sma_instagram_post_id":"","_sma_threads_post_id":"","_sma_x_attempts":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[3],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-3659","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-telecoms"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/3659"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=3659"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/3659\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=3659"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=3659"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=3659"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
