{"id":37526,"date":"2011-11-04T10:50:19","date_gmt":"2011-11-04T08:50:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=37526"},"modified":"2011-11-04T10:52:19","modified_gmt":"2011-11-04T08:52:19","slug":"one-in-five-accept-stranger-invites-on-facebook","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/technology\/37526-one-in-five-accept-stranger-invites-on-facebook.html","title":{"rendered":"One in five accept stranger invites on Facebook"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Researchers from the University of British Columbia infiltrated <a title=\"Facebook\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/348566-Facebook\">Facebook<\/a> with a host of bot-controlled fake accounts, and sent out a large number of friend requests, resulting in a the acquisition of 250GB of personal data.<\/p>\n<p>The bots managed this task in spite of Facebook\u2019s defensive measures, which include the <a title=\"CAPTCHA\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/378918-CAPTCHA\">CAPTCHA<\/a> system if an account tried to add too many friends in a short period of time, as well as the Facebook Immune System (FIS) which detects suspicious activity and blocks it.<\/p>\n<p>102 bots were used in total, which sent out friend requests to 5,053 random users with public accounts, 976 of which accepted them. The bots then proceeded to sent a further 3,517 requests to friends of those users, 2,079 of which accepted.
