{"id":376943,"date":"2020-11-23T12:16:20","date_gmt":"2020-11-23T10:16:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=376943"},"modified":"2020-11-23T12:17:34","modified_gmt":"2020-11-23T10:17:34","slug":"big-problems-with-twitter-disappearing-messages","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/security\/376943-big-problems-with-twitter-disappearing-messages.html","title":{"rendered":"Big problems with Twitter disappearing messages"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Twitter has confirmed that there is a bug with its new disappearing message feature where these messages can still be accessed after they should have vanished, reports <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2020\/11\/21\/twitter-fleets-bug\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>TechCrunch<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>These messages, which Twitter calls &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/internet\/376271-twitter-launches-disappearing-tweets.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>fleets<\/strong><\/a>,&#8221; were launched last Wednesday and are very similar to Facebook and Instagram Stories as they are meant to vanish after 24 hours.<\/p>\n<p>The feature is available across both iOS and Android, and allow users to publish text posts, reactions, photos, or videos that will disappear a day later.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause they disappear from view after a day, Fleets helped people feel more comfortable sharing personal and casual thoughts, opinions, and feelings,\u201d said Twitter regarding its testing of the feature.<\/p>\n<p>However, it has now been discovered that fleets can be accessed beyond the 24-hour period after which they are meant to disappear.<\/p>\n<p>This is possible using an app that is designed to interface with Twitter&#8217;s back-end through the Twitter developer API.<\/p>\n<p>This app allows users to access lists of fleets from Twitter&#8217;s servers, and each fleet has its own URL which can be opened in a browser to view the original fleet in either image or video form.<\/p>\n<p>These links continue to work after 24 hours has passed and the fleet is no longer visible on the user&#8217;s profile.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">full disclosure: scraping fleets from public accounts without triggering the read notification<\/p>\n<p>the endpoint is: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/332FH7TEmN\">https:\/\/t.co\/332FH7TEmN<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 cathode gay tube (@donk_enby) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/donk_enby\/status\/1329935540049817600?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 20, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Twitter working on a fix<\/h3>\n<p>Twitter told TechCrunch that it is working on a fix for this issue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re aware of a bug accessible through a technical workaround where some Fleets media URLs may be accessible after 24 hours,&#8221; said Twitter.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are working on a fix that should be rolled out shortly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, this will not involve deleting fleets from its servers after the 24-hour period is up.
