{"id":37905,"date":"2011-11-09T12:04:10","date_gmt":"2011-11-09T10:04:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/?p=37905"},"modified":"2011-11-09T15:47:00","modified_gmt":"2011-11-09T13:47:00","slug":"how-important-is-your-smartphone","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/internet\/37905-how-important-is-your-smartphone.html","title":{"rendered":"How important is your smartphone?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At its Think Mobile event in Cape Town this week, <a title=\"Google\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/314567-Google\">Google<\/a> announced new research findings about smartphone users in South Africa which can be accessed on the <a title=\"Mobile Planet\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ourmobileplanet.com\" target=\"_blank\">Mobile Planet website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Google revealed that the site gives anyone access to the full set of data from the \u201cGlobal Mobile Research: The Smartphone User &amp; The Mobile Marketer\u201d, conducted earlier this year with <a title=\"Ipsos\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/380313-Ipsos\">Ipsos<\/a>, in collaboration with the <a title=\"MMA - Mobile Marketing Association\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/vb\/showthread.php\/380317-MMA-Mobile-Marketing-Association\">Mobile Marketing Association<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The findings indicate that South Africans are \u2018going smart\u2019 &#8211; fast: 15% of South Africans have smartphones, but almost half of new smartphone users have only been using a smartphone for the past 12 months.<\/p>\n<p>South Africans considered their smartphones to be as important as their purses and keys, with 83% of mobile subscribers not wanting to leave home without their smartphones, the survey found.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_37925\" style=\"width: 607px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-37925\" class=\"size-full wp-image-37925 \" title=\"Mobile Planet 2011 - Smartphone penetration and usage in South Africa\" src=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Mobile-Planet-2011-Smartphone-penetration-and-usage-in-South-Africa.jpg\" alt=\"Mobile Planet 2011 - Smartphone penetration and usage in South Africa\" width=\"597\" height=\"518\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Mobile-Planet-2011-Smartphone-penetration-and-usage-in-South-Africa.jpg 597w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Mobile-Planet-2011-Smartphone-penetration-and-usage-in-South-Africa-86x75.jpg 86w, https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Mobile-Planet-2011-Smartphone-penetration-and-usage-in-South-Africa-161x140.jpg 161w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 597px) 100vw, 597px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-37925\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mobile Planet 2011 - Smartphone penetration and usage in South Africa<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Google also said that South Africans are using their smartphones to make smarter buying decisions: 62% of smartphone users have used their phones to do a product search; 54% use their smartphones during the shopping process; and 26% of smartphone subscribers have changed their minds as a result of gathering information on their smartphones while shopping in-store.<\/p>\n<p>In a similar vein, after looking up a business or service on their smartphones, 61% of people visited the business website, and 55% of people phoned the business.<\/p>\n<p>The survey also revealed that smartphones are competing with TV: 50% of South African smartphone users watch a video on their smartphones every month;
